Why do people want what they can't have?

I normally don't do this but right now I really want something I can't have. I know I can't have it, I know I won't get it, but I still go after it. Eventually the desire will of course subside, but in talking to my friends we all have been in the same situation and/or know others that have as well. As I said I'm normally not the kind of person that wants what I know I can't have (with few exceptions like cars, computers, and electronics in general) but why do we do this to ourselves? Gah! Anyways, I just needed to vent. If you have any suggestions on how to make this pass more quickly I'm all ears.

Consider it motivation to keep you from killing yourself due to taunts on MySpace.

You want material possessions? Too easy. Money is your boss, money is your whore.

Very often the things we want and cannot have are the things we cannot buy.

Like companionship, understanding, friendship.

Things like love.

the things I want but don't have are certain kinds of experiences. and I know that I can get them, but I don't like the way I'd have to do it. so I just do without.

besides, how boring would life be if you had nothing in the way of fantasies?

If people wanted what they have, then they'd have everything they wanted and wouldn't want for anything...sorta like the "it was in the last place I looked" syndrome...Of course it was-it was in the first place you looked, you'd have stopped.

This is a flawed argument. I want everything that I have, from my car to my clothes to my friends all the way down to my pet and all that lies between. Where does it say though that I can't want more?

Being content with what we have is, IMO, the best place a human being can be. I imagine it being a zen-like state with no wants or needs - pure bliss.

Wanting more is something I struggle with as well. More money, better job, more free time etc. mandy's helped me realise that appreciating what you have and treasuring the things you love is very important and go a long way in helping you get to 'contentment'.

It's not an argument. Didn't say you couldn't want more. We're all greedy. I said if we have what we wanted, we wouldn't want for more. Ya read it backwards

I do not want what I haven't got.

Want in one hand, shit in the other. See which one fills up first.

I want you to want me.

Maybe because there's always that one thing called 'hope'.

For all we know of our lives and of this universe, nothing is impossible and everything is possible. Therefore, one can always hope for something to come true, even if the chance for it to happen is incredibly small.

While I wouldn't go so far as to call it complete BS, I agree partially with your first point, but not so much with the second. Obviously one can't have anything they want, no matter how hard they try. That should never keep one from trying again though if at first they don't [i]succeed[i]. One just has to know when to throw in the towel.

Every once in a while I get this disgusting, hollow feeling that makes me feel nearly dead. I'll get it for like months at a time - I have no clue what it is, or why I feel like it, but I finally figured out what it was a couple of years ago - it's the realization that I have everything I currently wanted. I hate the feeling, and I yearn for the days when I have a long list of things I truly want, but can't have.

Pathetic, sad, but true!

I actually used this song as a teaching tool with two small children. Later, when her brother had a tantrum about not getting a bagel, big sister told him to remember the Rolling Stones.

Part of being an adult is being able to make wise decisions without being ruled by desire.

That's it, of course. But I'll take it one step one further ..... one should (from experience) begin to see when not to bother making an effort in the first place.

An example: I've never once chased a "hard to get" woman to find she was worth having. One might argue that she uses that ploy merely as a tool but such games reveal a character twitch and the games she plays never stop no matter how long you put up with her. Once you've "got her" she'll begin "the jeoulsy game". My advice is "if she's tough to get - she'll be tough to live with."

The same theory goes with other things in life. If it's tough to get - it'll be tough to keep/maintain. Not all of them (naturally) but many. The trick is to know which ones ae worth having and which ones are not.

Maybe because we haven't really convinced ourselves, in our hearts, that we can't have it.

I've often thought of humanity as a huge TV show, which is why were are made to live life to the very limits of our abilities to both achieve, and endure.

Money can't buy the things I want. Well, I suppose it could, but I definitely don't have enough for it. I think it's more a matter of knowing how to ask, rather than having the money. I would neglect my bills per month if I could spend my money on something that makes me happy, continuously.
