Join the Insomniac Club

Suffer from occassional or chronic insomnia?

Ever feel that sleep is a silly waste of time?

Would you like a way to vent your frustrations about your inability to sleep?

Do you have a late-night job with computer and no one to talk to?

Need a companion to share conversation with until you go back to your mundane daily grind?

Do you have a strange body clock that hinders your ability to interact with others?

The Insomniac Club is the place for you. We will group together and attempt to entertain each other in those twilight hours.

We'll start here. For now, let's just post in this thread, and maybe add something to your sig. But I'd like to take it a bit further. We can make efforts to be on IRC at certain times. Perhaps have an insomniac buddy list via AIM or ICQ or something so we can find other night-dwellers to chat with.

Post ideas here.

If I get enough response, perhaps I'll build us a little website.

Piggybacked this idea from another message board. That insomniac organization died out. We'll have a better one anyway.

ABSOLUTELY

Post ideas here..

I just woke up. Can I get back to you on the generating *ideas* part?

icy_ca 06-06-2003 10:21 AM

Used to be an amateur Insomniac until my son came along a year ago...!

Antagony 06-06-2003 01:17 PM

Surely there are more stirrings of interest than this . . .

Anyway, my initial ideas for the website -- Profile areas, where we can easily find ways to contact each other in the wee hours. These would include links to our various TFP journals, perhaps. We could have a community posting of links to sites and media for us to go over in our sleeplessness.

I don't know, whatever else you guys can think up.

Minx 06-06-2003 01:59 PM

I'll come back and see you....oh say at about 3 am mst :)

juanvaldes 06-06-2003 02:37 PM

unitl a few weeks ago it was rare we would goto bed around 2am then I would finally fall asleep between 4-7am.

Last summer I would goto bed after the sun rose and sleep last into the afternoon.

I'm pretty good now, would die if I had to do my class with no sleep. :D

WhoaitsZ 06-06-2003 03:06 PM

i've been an insomniac for year.

however I currently have no way to get to my pc when in bed.

damn the luck.

snowy 06-06-2003 03:21 PM

I have the hardest time going to sleep at night, but during the day I can just roll over and go to sleep whenever I want, so I'm starting to think sleeping at night is a waste of time. I've tried not taking naps, but if I do, I still don't sleep at night and I just get grumpy. Fortunately for the most part my schedule allows me to sleep when I want :)

TFP is my insomniac club...what else do I do when I'm not sleeping! LOL

Sign me up. :) Feel free to msg me on AIM if I'm awake at odd hours...onesnowyowl (go figure!)

HockeyGuy 06-06-2003 05:07 PM

Sorry this club won't work for me.. i sleep 24/7.. i'm the opposite.. if ever any of you want to enter my dreams though.. .uhhh. nevermind

madsenj37 06-06-2003 05:43 PM

I am not exactly an insomniac ... I have a hard time going to sleep, but once I am asleep, forget about it. I dont always get enough sleep though.

MSD 06-06-2003 06:24 PM

I'm in. Up 'till 2 or 3 every night, sometimes 6 or 7 in the morning.

rainincarnate 06-06-2003 06:48 PM

I've already vented about this in my journal.

Nope to the late night job, but I'm usually up late and online.

Somewhat, I'm usually up early and in bed late.

QuasiMojo 06-06-2003 08:35 PM

I'm game.

that is if I'm not sleeping fitfully. enveloped in the sweet arms of feathered slumber, drrooling uncontrollably as I surrender to that nocturnal inebriation called sleep.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
zz.

GHRAHZ!!!!!!!!

freakin' apnea.

lets do it.

Antagony 06-06-2003 08:46 PM

Oh yeah, I haven't shared my insomnia story --

I'm a chronic insomniac. I've had it as long as I can remember. Even when I was 7 or 8 I remember not being able to sleep. I would get up, and tip-toe through the hall with a pillow. Then I would duck low behind the couch, and lay down in view of the TV that my parents were watching.

I did that countless times, but was only caught on a few occassions. I tried to tell them that I couldn't sleep and I got bored, but my parents didn't really listen.

QuasiMojo 06-06-2003 08:58 PM

I wonder what the cause(s) of your insommnia could be Antagony.

For myself, when I can't sleep it is generally because I've hit the sack with a question or a prob on my mind that I haven't reconciled....so there I am-spinning.
eyes close. psyche goes.
By the way have you ever heard of "Sleep Paralysis"?

Antagony 06-06-2003 09:21 PM

There's really a plethora of possibilities of what could be the root of my insomnia. Could be physiological (like a chemical inbalance), or psychological (like chronic depression), or a number of things. I don't worry about it too much, I just consider a part of me.

I hadn't heard of "sleep paralysis" until you mentioned it, but I looked it up and did a bit of reading on it. Very interesting.

Why do you ask about sleep paralysis? Do you experience it?

XenuHubbard 06-06-2003 09:33 PM

I'm definetely in. I hate those days when sleep has been impossible, and I walk around in a daze.

If anyone hears of a Fight Club in Taiwan, its probably me.

phredgreen 06-06-2003 09:37 PM

okay... i just got my official VIP card to the insomnia club...

it's called a job that dosen't start til noon. :D

i've always had tendencies to stay up disgustingly late. strange birds, we be.

Antagony 06-06-2003 09:55 PM

Yessss . . . the ranks of our army are growing.

But still no suggestions for our organization?

vermin 06-06-2003 10:56 PM

I'm in (note the time).

I typed a bunch of stuff here, then re-thought about it. The rambling I cut and pasted to my journal if you're interested (I strayed WAY off topic).

Yes I have. And at times I still do. Strangest goddamn thing.
frickin' subject could stand it's own thread.
Imagine...you're sleeping- then all of a sudden your closed eyes open...but they are not open.
And you know it.
your field of vision is filled with daylight lucid images. streaming impossible images. You know you are in your bed. lying down but your brain feels like it has been plugged into some live wire- electrified and throbbing and you fight with all your might to open your eyes. And when you do, it is only for a moment and you slip back into this...electrified sub-consciesness. All night this goes on.
fighting for sleep.

usually this sleep/dream/hyperreal state had occured during periods of great stress and I think it was my minds way of escaping.
Ohhh I could go on and on....sorry I don't wanna hijack this great thread. but I would be curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Hey Antagony,

Okay, this isn't a suggestion per se, but are our troops gonna consider time zones? I'm in Central....and I'm not sleeping right now.

Halx 06-06-2003 11:44 PM

be in bed i should
an electrician coming at 7:30am he is
still fully clothed I am

QuasiMojo 06-06-2003 11:54 PM

How, Hi are you?

Up I am
against the wall.
Eastern born.

beyond belief.

Antagony 06-07-2003 12:20 AM

Double D:

Time zones are very much a consideration of mine. We have many international folk on the TFP as I have discovered through the IRC channel. I'll be saying "Good afternoon" when other TFPers are saying "I'm going to bed!"

And for reference, I too am in the Central time zone.

Dorkums642 06-07-2003 01:13 AM

I work all night :)

It's great. I've always hated going to bed early PM. I always felt like I was sleeping life away. Now, I sleep when everyone I know is at work and things work out real well. I wake up around noon and can get all my errands done that I wouldn't be able to do with a day shift. I also don't sleep nearly as much when I work all night and I don't even notice.

I'll join the club! I'm not always able to be at a computer at regular times at night so I can't suggest a group activity but this thread is great entertainment for now.

That sleep paralysis idea is pretty believable. I think that's what I get when I'm sick. I have crazy fucked up dreams that I am almost completely conscious of but not aware or able to do anything about. I've had that as long as I remember. Also, when I expose myself to something really new (video game or a job) that I put a lot of time into, then I'll have crazy sleeping but awake dreams about whatever it is.

anyway, it's nice to see I'm not entirely alone at night :)

snowy 06-07-2003 01:20 AM

Pacific time here...and I'm still up...yay...

Tom Thumb 06-07-2003 08:03 AM

Sure, I'm in. Though it's not a constant thing. I generally get to sleep at 2-ish, and every few months I'll have periods of a week or two where I don't sleep at night at all.

But really, I think we should evolve out of Needing four-ten hours of sleep every night. Let our bodies learn to rejuvinate while we're awake.

It's like that Walken skit:
"Do you work?"
"Yes, but only part of the time. Every day from nine to five."
"That's a full day's work, sir."
"Not really. There are huge periods where I'm just sleeping...it's ridiculous."

darksparkles 06-07-2003 11:14 AM
