So I live in a three bedroom apartment with 4 roommates. We decided to rotate rooms every semester -- last semester I had to share a room, but now I've got my own. I'm trying to make it as badass as possible, and it's coming along nicely, but I still have nothing on the walls! I kind of refuse to put posters up, because I'm not a 12 year old girl. I also refuse to put art of any kind up. It's an awkward stage of my life, really; in between posters and art. Although I'm really starting this thread for ideas, I'm also interested in what the rest of you have/had decorating the room in your college days.

There's some pretty damn creative people lurking around here, so I'm sure this will be interesting.

Why not split the difference and go with framed posters? I found quite a few inexpensive artsy posters that looked quite nice during my college days.

You could also make your own framed art - I still have several photos hanging that I've taken over the years which I laser printed on glossy paper, matted and then framed them.

I had posters from the Lord of the Rings movies on my wall...mm Viggo Mortensen. I liked them because I could drool over them in private but they didn't make me look like a middle schooler. My room through college had two themes: LOTR and clouds...all my bedding, my lampshades, my drapery, and my phone were in cloud print.

With the poster thing, it totally depends on what you put up. A Pulp Fiction poster will not make you look like a 12-year-old girl. Neither will a collection of liquor ads. All through high school my walls were papered in various ads taken from British music magazines. The general effect was very cool, and I got compliments from nearly everyone who saw it.

Right now the things adorning my walls: photographs of Paris through the ages, some art by TFPer kramus, and liquor ads. Pick something you like and find something that fits--be it pictures from your last vacation, postcards people have sent you, or an old calendar you tear apart.

Well our living room is already decorated in the alcohol theme (mostly cut up beer cases), so I didn't really want to continue that into my room. I'm thinking that the rasterbation website might be the most fun way to go... I just need to decide on what the hell I want to print out, I guess.

When I moved, I took a box that for some reason had random papers and art projects in it from middle and high school, so it's hanging on my wall right now. It's pretty sweet, I have certificates from Jr. high student council, academic team, a trophy from tee ball, and some random stuff from art class. I also have a neon wall clock and random posters.

Yeah, a dartboard would be cool. I have boards up that I put pictures of my friends and myself on. Some small framed french liquor pictures, a calendar and some framed painted feathers from Costa Rica. You could put up some of your favorite movie posters..those are kind of cool.

Art is ALWAYS good.

What you need to get is some M.C. Escher, get it framed- instant cool, instant class. If you want to delve deeper (darker), you can get some Luis Royo, or even some Geiger (if you really, REALLY want dark stuff).

You could also go with some Salvador Dali, or maybe Monet (every time I think of Monet, I think of the movie Clueless). None of this is very expensive. Go to a store that sells the posters of these works, then get them framed. You can buy cheap frames for a fwe bucks, or spend a little more for better frames.

The most important part of the art on your walls is that it speaks to you- because if you can't talk about the art on your wall, people see right through you. You don't have to know anything about it, you just have to feel something for it.

In my room, I've got a big wall hanging I picked up in Hong Kong, an Irish flag, a POW/MIA flag, and a Cisco networking poster.

I refuse to plaster my walls with posters, though - I wanted a few things on the walls, but I wanted it to be tasteful. My girlfriend's room bugs the hell out of me, as every single square inch of wall is covered in a poster or a photo or something else like that.

Has anyone used rasterbator for anything artistic? Some of the images on the site are done REALLY well. I'm trying to think of ways to border an image like that, including mid-picture borders (instead of the white from the paper). Also, does anyone have any suggestions about papering a whole wall with it? What to use to stick the paper to the wall (without it soaking through) and what to use to coat and protect it? Some kind of decoupage type stuff?

I was thinking the cheapest, least permanent, easiest, and probably somewhat sturdy way to put a rasterbated image up would be to attach the papers to poster boards using glue, then attach the poster boards to the wall using thumb tacks.

Just call me Mini-Martha..
rather than using thumbtacks - which makes all sorts of holes in the wall - you can either use velco strips (you can buy a pretty long strip pretty cheaply, and put a piece on each corner - or use a tacky putty - which most craft stores sell - it's kinda like playdough only really sticky and cleans up easily.

If you are in a craft store - you could also glue the rastered papers to foam core - least i think that's what it's called -its a hard back poster board that's maybe 1/8 of an inch thick and you can use a utility knife to cut it into the sizze you need... will keep your image in good shape

ive always wanted to use that raterbastor for a full wall. I want to take a tropical sceen of the beach w/ palm tree's and such overlookin the ocean and do that. the movie Scarface has it in wall paper, but it isnt raterbastor.
I just need to find the image.

I have posters of art. IN YOUR FACE. However, if you're not into posters or art at all... be creative. Cut a square hole in the wall and serve people breakfast through it. Paint a gaint eye on one wall, and angled mirrors on the others. Put up a myriad of hooks, and hang all of your clothing on your walls so that they are completely covered.

I've seen something much more classy on Restaurant Makeover: a designer took a bunch of pictures the restaurateur took on his travels and had them printed onto a long, wide piece of durable paper in a very cool way. The construction guys in turn hung this up like wallpaper. It was visually interesting and it looked really nice. I'm assuming any good printers could do something similar.

/threadjack Yeah, it's a Canadian show! But they show it in the States and pass it off like some US show. I picked up on the fact it was Canadian immediately, though...but that's probably from a childhood full of Canadian TV. All of the restaurants I've seen on the show so far are in Toronto, which makes me want to go there all the more so I can actually see these places...I know, I'm weird.

Unfortuanaly, I too am a college student and my travels havent been that great. That and I am no photographer (I dont own a camera, never take pictures)
I have been to some cool places, and I know I can take any town/city/place and have cool pictures from there, but I dont think that would be too conversational stimulating.

I have a vague idea for getting a rasterbator mural. But I imagine it'll take some patience. How about a different type of paper to print the rasterbated image onto? Could be a transparent paper or even something that's more appropriate as wallpaper.

But I was thinking more of transfer paper, I have no idea if this would work. I don't know the name or anything, but I know that there are some papers you can buy that are transparent, and you can print from a regular printer onto them. Then you take them and place on whatever surface you want, and then you apply a damp sponge to the front, and it transfers what you printed onto the back surface. I think that would be a pretty cool idea. If I try it myself I'll show you all sometime!

Wow, that is a really cool idea. I was thinking about using some nice gloss paper to print whatever my main rasterbation is. I was thinking about a giant wile coyote splatting into the painted on train tunnel, but I can't find a picture of it anywheree.
