Art is ALWAYS good.
What you need to get is some M.C. Escher, get it framed- instant cool, instant class. If you want to delve deeper (darker), you can get some Luis Royo, or even some Geiger (if you really, REALLY want dark stuff).
You could also go with some Salvador Dali, or maybe Monet (every time I think of Monet, I think of the movie Clueless). None of this is very expensive. Go to a store that sells the posters of these works, then get them framed. You can buy cheap frames for a fwe bucks, or spend a little more for better frames.
The most important part of the art on your walls is that it speaks to you- because if you can't talk about the art on your wall, people see right through you. You don't have to know anything about it, you just have to feel something for it.
