Medieval weaponry--where to buy?

Any one know of a good place on-line that sells Medieval weaponry, if they take Pay Pal...it's a plus! Thanks!

Depends, are you gonna hang it on the wall and never touch it, or do you want it to be usable should an unforseen horde of Norsemen go a-viking in yer neighbourhood?

Me? Were I looking for an actual weapon, I know a few competent weaponsmiths that I could probably get in touch with locally. If I were paying for it with my own money though (ie paying a real price that a normal schmoe could pay) I would look at either Museum Replicas (and be picky, a number of their pieces aren't worth the money at ll) or someone that sells Paul Chen Hanwei (spelling?) swords. I've no personal experience with Paul Chen, but I hear very good things.

Frankly, I'd suggest looking for a place where you can actually go and handle the weapon. You'll likely be surprised how much your hand may hate something that your eye loves. I found that while swords are pretty to look at, I tend to like the heft of a good mass weapon, such as mace, axe, or hammer. I also found that I like the feel of swords that I never would've thought from the look. Be careful, and try to find something that you can touch before buying it. Weapons ain't cheap after all.

Oh, and if you're just looking for a wallhanger, there are hundreds of el-cheapo places around that sell United Cutlery type stuff perfect for adorning your mantlepiece and impressing chicks.

Do you mean actual real midieval cutlery? or do you want convincing replicas? If you want replicas try www.museumreplicas.com

They have lots of really good stuff all copied from originals and all fully functional.

i have to agree about 'trying' a weapon first, especially if you plan to use it for anything.

i can say that my current bastard sword is the 9th (and probably the ugliest) one i've tried out, but it's so perfectly weighted you could just stand outside all day letting it practically swing itself in drills.

I would like to "handle" the weapon, maybe not actually use it in combat though. Thanks for the tips!

Well, where do you live? R&J Cutlery is in Victorville, CA and Las Vegas. I work at the Victorville store.

They had a stand at a festival I went to, and they have some really neat stuff (that is useable in combat if need be). Theres a picture of them breaking a cement block with a sword on there somewhere. More than just swords too! (they had a badass looking mace, but I dont see it on the website)

I want a room in my house dedicated to medieval stuff. I want to have a full suit of armour and all the weapons. I love this kind of stuff but I'm rather low on the money.

Nerdy ones.

I want some display pieces myself, but I know I'll feel like a liar having a sword on the wall that would break if it met anything harder then a tree stump.

I'd like to forge some myself. Not make the crappy display pieces by sharpening some spring steel, I mean forging my own shit and beating on it with a hammer on top of an anvil. YAR-ETH! GO HENCE FROM THOU AND FETCH THINE ALE AND WENCHES YOU SCURVEY KNAVE-DOGSETH!

If those display pieces hit a tree stump they would probably break too!

FYI, you could make a fully functional sword by sharpening a leaf spring. Spring steel has a very high carbon content and would make a very fine blade!

Badger blades make incredible weapons. Their site's not totally complete yet, but they intend to include online ordering in the near future from what I can tell. They're much more focused on combat-ready swords than museum pieces as well. You can see what's at their site at www.badgerblades.com or catch their tent at your next renfest.

Probably, but I want to hit things with a hammer, to build something I will then in turn use to hit things with.

The cycle of hitting.

For most people I would suggest www.budkww.com that has a good selection of inexpensive items. From Bud K you will either get a totally decorative item or a functional item. Also, there is
www.by-the-sword.com ; their pieces tend to averageo n the more expensive side but are usually nicer pieces and not so much the die-cast works you might get from Bud K.

If you want to get REAL weapons, as in combat grade weapons, you have two choices. First, start going to your local Ren/medieval faires/fests and do some shopping there. If you really want live steel, find someone who makes weapons which can cut cinder-blocks unscathed. Of course, these events will also have more inexpensive items. Your other option is to take up fencing, like I will when I get the cash. For this case, I would suggest joining the SCA because we teach fencing and b uying a starter kit from www.triplette.com .

Peace be with you,
G
