These questions have been asked before...still need help

Yep, the basic question. What do I have to get in order to fire a class 3 gun? (Legal resident, no bad record, and living in Missouri)

I know this has been asked over and over but I have yet to find a answer to it. I reviewed my states gun laws and it seems we ban things that explode and are quite.
(found that out with http://www.mp5.net/home.htm)

"(C&R mg, sr, sg only to non-FFL holders; FFL holders (including C&R) any mg, sr, sg)"
Would like someone to explain what some of this means.
I'm not interested in short shotguns or most of the other items that fall into this catigory.

Just want to feel what firing a impressive piece of michinery (only use target pratice). Also can someone explain what the FFL Dealer is and who they can sell to. "$20.00 shipping to your FFL dealer" seems to come up allot on www.gunsamerica.com

I see these really impressive rifles for sale and wonder what I have to do in order to legally own one. I am a fan of ak-47 and m-16 type rifles.

Really, is it worth it to try to get everything I need to own one or should I just go for a bushmaster type of situation?

FFL is French Foreign Legion. Start by checking that out.

AS for getting the permit and owning a gun, you're looking at a hefty price tag. I'll let the people who really know what they're talking about tell you more.

You need a Class 3 Federal Firearms License(FFL) to buy ,sell, or otherwise own a modern automatic weapon. If your interests are more toward older (automatic)weapons, a Curio and Relics(C&R) FFL (much easier to obtain) is required. Having an FFL requires quite a bit of paperwork up front, cash, and the ability to maintain paperwork on the status of all weapons bought, sold, traded, or possesed. Go to the BATF Website for more license info. (Your local gun shop is what the mean by local FFL dealer, they can't send the weapon directly to you unless you have an FFL).

What do you mean by a Bushmaster situation? If you mean an AR-15, Bushmaster is just one of many mil-spec AR-15 manufactures. And possibily not your best choice. Oh yeah, then there's that pesky pre-/post- ban issue you have to deal with.

Do you want to own it, or just fire it? Owning is expensive and difficult. As an example, a local dealer here in VA has an M-60 (7.62 NATO LMG, if you're not familiar with it) for sale and has had it for a few years. Last time I saw it, it was priced at $7000, including ATF fees/stamps. There is a waiting period while the ATF does all of its' background checks on you and tons of paperwork to fill out. I believe you also need to show that you have certain security measures in place to prevent theft of said firearm.

Personally, I have no interest in owning them. They are expensive as hell and cause an undue amount of scrutiny. It's much easier to just find a range to rent one for an afternoon. While on a business trip to LA, I took a weekend trip to Vegas. Vegas had quite a number of shops that rented out Class III firearms for use in their own indoor ranges. You don't own it, sure, but you also don't have to fill out scads of paperwork. I got to fire an MP-5 and an MP-38. Very, very fun experience.

Frankly, for what you'd pay for a fully automatic weapon, you could take a trip to Vegas every year for the next decade and shoot Class III at the ranges there.

Oh, and did I mention that VERY few ranges will let you shoot full auto weapons? If you have a farm in the middle of nowhere, you might have less problems, but the local law enforcement types tends to get antsy when someone starts ripping out full auto fire. It's a major hassle all around.

I live in Houston and there is a place less than 40 miles from my house where you can rent a variety of full auto weapons for between 20 and 120 bucks an hour. You gotta shoot em on the range and you gotta pay for ammo. The ammunition gets very pricey on some (MAC-10, etc.) with high rates of fire. It is so much fun.
