5mm Rifles
excited about the reintroduction of 5mm ammunition i pulled my old rifle out of the closet and dusted it off. i threw it up to my shoulder and heard a rattle.
i turn it over and i see a crack. i had forgotten my gramps used the rifle to club a pissed off momma raccoon back in the good old days. not wanting to leave those babies momless, he golf-clubbed her ass into the shrubbery. no frets, i'll take it to the gunsmith and get it repaired. anyways, this gun is old. i'm not quite sure i want carry this thing through the woods on a squirrel killing spree and risk scratching it all to hell...even though i probably will anyways. has anyone out there heard anything about the reintroduction of the 5mm rifle itself? are any companies out there going to start making this rifle again?

Dead round, dead platform. Stock work won't be too bad, but don't hold your breath looking for spare parts.
Unfortunately 5mm Rem. never took off in the market, especially once the .17 Remington and .221 Fireball came about. The .17HMR was the final nail in the coffin, and .204 Ruger threw the dirt on. A few companies still produce a -very- limited amount of the ammunition, but I'm not aware of any new rifles being chambered in 5mm Rem. in perhaps 15-20 years, if not longer. A supplier calls me with dirt-cheap ammo on offer every few months; last I heard, the ammo they were trying to sell me was 8-yr-old backstock that nobody else wants either. Given the realities of the ammo situation, I doubt very seriously that any new rifles or loadings will be introduced. There are simply too many other cartridges, both centrefire and rimfire, that fill the same niche caliber/performance-wise and have much more/better reloading data, brass and projectiles available. |

Authority? Hardly. How do you think I learn this stuff? It shows up all the time, and I'm the guy who has to find out, if nothing else, how to market the damned thing. Old guns in oddball calibers are fun and interesting, but a tough sell. It's always fun when somebody brings in something new, or unusual, or with some history.
