oh, i can shoot the wings off a fly with a rifle. when i get bored i shoot pinecones out of the trees with my .22. put a shotgun in my hand and im great. but i've been shooting both of those things since i was 5 or so.
a pistol on the other hand, no such luck. i was 16 the first time i picked one up, and i couldnt get the hang of it. that short barrel isnt my friend. edit: i cant believe a Canadian is giving me shit about fire-arms. a pistol none-the-less.

Hahaha, guns tend to bring out the judgmental side of people. It's harder to shoot with a pistol than people imagine (like people asking why cops don't shoot guns out of peoples hands).
Regardless, this guy either (a) did not zero his scope correctly; or (b) Needs A LOT MORE range time. 3 shots. All missed. With a bolt action. Wtf? |

...i took it as total shit.
yeah, i was thinking that he knocked his scope off. he always seems to shoot up and to the left. maybe he learned his lesson from this little thing. that was a nice buck, at least by south-east standards.

Here's a lil' somethin for you, SSJ.
Rightie's handgun diagnosis One for lefties And for those who haven't fired a pistol before, take a look, too. Because pistols lack the stability a shoulder stock provides, all sorts of things can influence where a pistol's bullet ends up - from applying too much pressure on one side with your trigger finger while firing, to anticipating the flash and bang that are happening a few feet from your face. Pistol shooting is an entirely different animal compared to rifle shooting, and one can know how to aim and still not be able to hit what they're aiming at. As a case study, when taking my CCW class, part of the course was a live-fire shooting test. There was one other gunnie in my class of about 12 people. Targets were standard police qualification targets - a man sized silhouette with about a 1 by 1 foot square in the middle. The drill was 50 shots at various ranges, starting from 3 yards and ending at 7. He and I were the only ones who got all of our shots in the middle square, achieving actual groupings with our pistols. The rest of the class was all over the paper, which looked more like it had been shot with a shotgun. Keep in mind we all got a practice round with instruction from a former CIA pistol instructor, as well as the fact that many were using full sized steel pistols instead of their carry guns for the test. Now, most of them could hit the man-sized target, but any consistency was out the window. I believe people being raised to fear firearms is a horrible thing, and probably one of the biggest contributors to this (then again, so are our own instincts). Every person there passed the course in the end, but so much work was needed that the idea of these people carrying was a little bit scary. I truly hope none of them ever needs their firearm for defensive use, but more than that I hope they each recognized that they need to get a TON more range time if they're going to take up the responsibility that is carrying concealed.

This is so true for me too. With a rifle I can literally hit bottle caps at 10 yards, with a pistol I'd be lucky to even get all my shots to hit a man sized target at 10 yards...Wish I knew what I was doing wrong. I mean, I know pistols have less inherent accuracy, but not that much less.

I dunno, guys. The shooting mechanics between a pistol and a rifle aren't all that different. Firm but flexible posture, sight picture, trigger squeeze.
I shoot well with pistols or rifles. The key success is being aware of your body and how it affects the weapon. Your body is the gun cradle. Rifles are generally easier to shoot with because they are more substantial to hold and offer a stock, longer sight picture, and greater weight. |

^ yes^
During the ten year period that I hunted deer, I chose a bit heavier rifle for steadiness. (A sporterized 303 British/Enfield with a 1x scope.) I was also more comfortable with the bolt action in freezing temps. I didn't trust my thumb as a safety with the 30-30 lever action. I was fortunate to have a cousin who trained me well, from the start. I didn't have bad habits to overcome. When I used to target practice with various handguns at the range, it was hard not to notice the basic mistakes of others, especially the trigger squeeze. The slightest pressure off center creates wild results, not to mention the anticipation of the 'bang bang' or the raising of the head. |

So, I read all of your comments before watching the video. I couldn't wait to see what it showed. In my opinion, this guy is simply an inexperienced shooter. Miss once - yeah, yeah, it happens, perhaps he didn't sight in his scope this year. However, the second and third shots miss in essentially the same place as the first. There was a puff of smoke from the first round which should have told him some information on sight picture correction for the second and third. He made no corrections and repeated his miss consistently. Seems like a guy who fires a firearm 5 times a year. Practice, practice, practice.
Here's the real question: how did this video ever leave his stand? If I was that pathetic, I would press delete before I traversed down the ladder.

so, it turns out i can hit a target (old rusty bucket bottom) about ten inches in diameter 9/11 times at about 15 yards. if i toss a soda bottle out, no such luck, i may hit it once or twice but i mostly knock the dirt up around it. maybe i was just knocking myself to hard to begin with, but i still feel that i need some serious practice.
thanks for those targets, m00t. i need to get to a library and print a few out. they would probably help a lot. the thing that always makes me tense is the slide slaming backwards towards my eye. for some dumb reason i constantly fear impact. i need to stop being a pussy and get over it.
