guys, I just talked to my pops a lil while ago. He told me that he picked up a cobra .380 i
am not that familiar with the weapons and I want to know the general opinion on the little piece. I know that it is a cheaper model, and it ways quite a bit, but other than that, Im totally in the dark as to this particular model. Thanks in advance guys, I sure do appreciate it.

Cobra weapons are the only "cheap"-ish thing we carry. They share a basic design with the Jennings/Lorcin/Bryco/Jimenez family of boat-anchors, but are built out of actual steel rather than pot-metal and zinc, and as a consequence actually work reliably. However, they do have a -marked- preference for Federal ammo for some reason. Good ol' workaday everyman's gun, the kind of thing you can carry if needed, stuff in the glove-compartment or tacklebox, and generally tromp around the world with while not worrying about the finish.

I'm a gun snob, so I wouldn't even consider buying one; that said™, better a Cobra in the pocket than a fine pistol in the gun safe at home.

Put 200–300 rounds through it. If it doesn't jam and goes bang every time you pull the trigger, carry it with pride.

I hear that about being a gunsnob, but he bought it for my mom as strictly a home defense gun.(she cannot have a gun where she works) Ive not heard of them too much, but there seem to be mixed reviews. Dad said he took it out today and got 10 rounds off, then it wouldnt cycle or even cock. Thankfully the cobra comes with a no questions asked lifetime warranty so he can just send it back, but it is the 2nd time this has happend (the whole not cocking thing). if I get another update ill let yall know. Thanks for the replies guys.

what do you mean by check the ammo? He was shooting ball ammo and Im not sure exactly what grain it was. It was winchester bought off the shelf. No reloads.

A police surplus S&W auto would be a better choice.

And there's your problem. As I said above, Cobra handguns have a marked preference for Federal-brand ammo. I'm fairly certain it's what Cobra Arms uses for testing as well.

Crompsin, how much would a smith run as opossed to the cobra? Im pretty sure thats why he went with the cobra.

You can haggle a used S&W 5906 down to $300-350. I've got one on my nightstand.

They're sturdy as hell and very reliable. Not something that can be said of the Cobra.
