Squealing TV
I bought a 27" Sony Trinitron about 7 months ago and within the last week, it has intermittently (sp?) made a high pitched squealing noise. It sounds like when a CRT computer is on but has no signal.
What could be the cause?

Horizontal output, High voltage section, or switching power supply
are likely the cause. Did you buy this set? It is a Sony that squeals. http://archive.avsforum.com/avs-vb/h.../481106-1.html |

I have a similar model to the one you posted. I haven;t been able to pinpoint when it does.doesn't happen.
My setup right now is the TV is connected to my DirecTV box via S-video cable, with the audio going directly from the box to the receiver (ie bypassing the TV altogether.) Only othe rinputs are for my Xbox on the front of the set.

Something may be vibrating. Hit the side of the set :-)
If it stops making noise for awhile that's the problem. Not good for your waranty (sp?) but looking/listening/touching with a long stick of wood or plastic with the back off should help you isolate the noisy device. You could then try to stop it from vibrating. Better to send it to a shop if you have no knowledge of the problems & personal health issues of TV's with their backs off. There are previous threads here of these issues. |

I wacked the set and did get it to stop......for 2 seconds. The warantee is only 90 days (of course), and I didn't buy the service plan because my last Trinitron lasted me 13 years with zero issues

It's 3 months later and after a long time with no problems, the squeal returned today. It definitely has something to do with signal input, video specifically. If I unplug the S-Video cables from either end, the squeal goes away. I have just 1 S-Video input on my TV, so I have an S-Video switcher so I can run both my DirecTV and DVD player off S-Video. I have not yet tracked down if this is a cable issue, a switcher issue, or something internal in the TV

I had a similar problem with my TV whenever the house was hot and there was a lot of black on the screen. A repair guy fixed it in about 2 minutes.
He opened up the TV, found a little wire coil inside, put glue on the coil and closed it back up. The coil was vibrating when the conditions were just right. Go figure.

I have a high pitched squeal in my monitor that appears aftear it's on for a while. It goes away if I hit the screen with the palm of my hand (keep some windex nearby, I'm OCD and fingerprints bug the hell out of me!) or if I turn it off, wait until I hear a static charge build up on the screen then turn it back on. It sometimes starts when a program changes teh resplution (and presumably the refresh rate.) My house was wired by poorly trained chimps who were clearly paid with moonshine and PCP, so supply-side electrical problems are a possible source. I can deal with it, but I really want to know what's causing it. I have two old Aiwa 45 watt speakers right next to it (the magnetic fields don't interfere with picture,) and I suspect they might be part of the problem, although it does happen when they're off.
Any ideas? |
