VHS is one of the poorest video qualities in comparison to the DV out there.
The thing you will need to do is to encode it, using either a Dazzle card (consumer item) or Osprey (semi/pro) or something similar. I don't have any links at the moment but I'll see what I can find.

I bought a card for $29 bucks that lets you do it. Avermedia was the brand.
It was sufficient for archiving old family movies before the tapes deteriorated.
