Editing MP3 File information help - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

So I have somewhere like 1000 songs that I either ripped or DLed off of various sites.

There are all sorts of neato featuresthat WinAMP and other digital jukeboxes have that will let you automatically create playlists or choose the music based on Genre or by selection multiple artists etc.

The problem is that most of my files don't really have all of that information with them. Now I can edit the information through say WINAMP, but I have to go three levels in through menus = pain in the ass.

I would just like to be able to go to my directory that I have all my music in and start editing at the top from what I know. Really easy to manipulate a lot of files method is what I am looking for.

Anyone understand what I need and can offer a sugestion?

A suggestion? How about being more organized

Although you aren't very specific in your post, I'm assuming you're looking to change filenames and/or ID3 tags. There are some tools out there to "help" you do this, but they all suck. An ID3 tagger may help, but file renamers are a pain.

Rioport audio manager is a pain to learm, but gives you all needed type boxes and variables for ID3 tags and filenames in one dialog box on the "edit"command. Offes chioces of artists name (type your own or choose drop down based on those names already entered or detected by filename and ID3) which is usefull if many are from the same artists. Offers song name, cd name, cd track #, bitrate conversion (only in pay version), and playlist creating based on artist, cd, etc, all in a winamp comaptable format.
It's meant for Rio owners, but should do the job. Sorry, but you'll still be going track by track.

I did not know they were called ID3 Tags, but okay that sounds like what I need.

I looked at the Riopart stuff since it came with the wife's MP3 player. I don't mind going track to track since the information is firly independent to each song. The thing I don't like about it is that I cannot just edit File #1 and Finish and then go to File #2. You have to click on the next song, select the menue and then select edit. This is a lot of clicking if you are going to dedicate the time to editing these things.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Editing file names or ID3 tags is a manual process. There are different tools out there to do but each has its pros and cons. Personally, I manually clean up all tags but it takes time.

I use www.id3-tagit.de and used to use MP3 Tag Clinic. MP3 Tag Clinic was my favorite but it's buggy under 2000 and XP. EDIT: there is an update to MP3 Tag Clinic that may fix the bugs s I'm going back to using it.

Do a search on www.download.com - you'll find plenty of apps.

If you collection is too big (like mine > 5000) this product is a bit slow, but you may want to check it out. It is called the most obvious of names also.

If you have Musicmatch Jukebox 7.5 you can put all your songs in the Jukebox library and this software has a feature that is call supper tagging. What this does is look up tags from the internet, information about each song such as artist, album, track. and tagg the songs for you, even it give you the picture from the album's cover.
I hope this is what you need.

I'd go with www.id3-tagit.de as well. It came in very handy when I was fixing tags on ~5000 mp3s

Tag & Rename is my suggestion....

especially if you've got more albums, because it's got allmusic.com support, very handy if you're missing track #s.

Little Bump here.

I took all of your advice and I grabbed Tag & Rename. It was totally sweet after I figured it out. I never figured out what SiN was talking about with allmusic.com, but I got about 1000 MP3s all tagged so I can use WinAmp to generate custom playlists based on reliable information about Genre and Artist. Thanks again to everyone.

I used to have MMJB 7.5 that worked with my iPod and had Super Tagging which was the best thing ever. You could choose a bunch of non-adjacent artists (ex. Beatles; beetles; beatels; the Beatles; The Beetls; etc.), and make them not only have the same artist name (The Beatles) in the tag, but also actually change the file names to have the same artist name and format.

That came with my iPod, but I have lost it with the crash of my old laptop. I want it again!!?!?!??! I may have to try and get it from oldversion.com, but I wonder if MMJB still will honor my old registration without making me upgrade or pay $$$.

Any help here guys?
