What sort of hosting are we talking about? Do you need a lot of storage, a lot of bandwidth, or both? And in terms of email what do you need? Do you need full access to pop/smtp/imap servers, or just somewhere to log in and check your accounts?
Without knowing the exact application it's hard to give specific hosts, but what I usually recommend for small operations is to talk to people in the techie scene in your area. You can usually find a grass roots operation, where a guy leases a pipe, sets up a server and starts charging. Generally it's pretty cheap and since it's usually some techie who's looking for a few extra bucks on the side, good tech support is part of the deal.

I am a techie in my local area.
What I'm looking for is a place with web hosting, say 1GB + mail hosting, and which can perhaps do a web board, meaning they have PHP and mySQL hosting as well, though that last bit isn't as important. And the price shouldn't be high for the main two bits (web and mail hosting). While I don't tend to get a major hit on bandwidth, I also don't want to some day be /.'d and be hit with a massive overage bill. |

I'm part owner of a hosting/consulting company in Texas. You are more than welcome to call or go by the site to see what the company offers. Like I said though, I'm an investor in the company, I do not work there.

I use DreamHost (http://www.dreamhost.com) and have been quite pleased with them.
