CD/DVD drive icon stuck
The drive still works fine, but the icon and name in 'my computer' doesn't change and the pop-up box doesn't come up anymore. If I use any other application, there's no problem.

You could try rolling back drivers, or in the event that they've never been changed, you could uninstall the drivers and let Windows re-detect it. I'm going to assume you have Windows XP from the "pop-up box" comment (Hint: next time, tell us! It will make our job easier.), so I'll run you through how to do those in XP.
Right click on My Computer and go to Properties. Up at the top of the window that appears, there should be a Hardware tab. (Note: If you're using other versions of Windows, I think it just shows up as "Device Manager," no Hardware tab) Click that, then click Device Manager. Scroll down to the CD/DVD-ROM drives and find the one that won't update. Right click on that icon and go to Properties. The rest should be pretty easy to figure out. If you need to uninstall the device, just restart Windows and it should pop right back up. XP makes this sort of thing pretty easy. If that doesn't work, get back to me... I'll think of something else. |

I agree that more infos would be helpful
Now, do you mean, perhaps, .. that, when you change discs, the icon does not change accordingly (like, if you put a game disc in, it should change to the game icon, if you put a photoshop disk in, it should change to the photoshop icon, etc...). ... and that the 'name' - correctly called a volume label, does also not update properly to match the contents of the disk ... and this 'pop up box' I assume you're referring to Windows Auto-run pop-up, that says 'disk detected, what should I do with it blah blah'... ?? OK, now ... the auto-run I've no clue on, as I always turn that shit off ... but, the icon and volume label updating .. I've not seen this problem recently, but I DO remember having such problems once upon a time, on an older system, running xp pro, but I think before the time of the sp1 and sp2. not sure if the service pack fixed it, or if it was a problem of the drive/drivers. anyways, that's all I can add atm, but I'm interesting to see what the solution turns out to be, because as I said, I had that problem and it always buggered me, and I never figured it out.

^^^ Uh, yeah, what he said.
I have Win XP SP2, btw. I think I'm going to leave update the driver as my last resort, because it'll probably not work at all if I do anything to it, (Just part of my charm, I guess. =P) And I need to use it intensively for the next few weeks.
