You could try rolling back drivers, or in the event that they've never been changed, you could uninstall the drivers and let Windows re-detect it. I'm going to assume you have Windows XP from the "pop-up box" comment (Hint: next time, tell us! It will make our job easier.), so I'll run you through how to do those in XP.
Right click on My Computer and go to Properties. Up at the top of the window that appears, there should be a Hardware tab. (Note: If you're using other versions of Windows, I think it just shows up as "Device Manager," no Hardware tab) Click that, then click Device Manager. Scroll down to the CD/DVD-ROM drives and find the one that won't update. Right click on that icon and go to Properties. The rest should be pretty easy to figure out. If you need to uninstall the device, just restart Windows and it should pop right back up. XP makes this sort of thing pretty easy.
