Photoshop question

My Mom took a photoshop course in college and now I am taking the same one. She bought a copy of Photoshop and installed it on her laptop. I want to put it on my laptop, but was told by several people that the software calls home from the internet and verifies that you don't have two or more copies. Is this true?

I've certainly never heard of this happening. What version does she have? Also, if you don't register the program when you install it, which is perfectly legal providing you actually purchased the software, I doubt anything like that would happen.

Worse case scenario, install it, and see what happens

I think chance was thinking of product activation, which is quite real. Assuming she bought the latest version of Photoshop (is there any other version that one would purchase?), it most certainly "calls home," much like how Windows XP does.

Now, chance could just try it out and see what happens but there is a real and legitimate fear of the consequences, since doing so is a clear violation of the user license agreement...

I might know a couple of people. I of course pay for every piece of software and never use my high speed connection or CD burner.

I had to buy a copy. My photoshop teacher confirmed that the program will lock up as soon as it hits the internet. Adobe says two machines, but my Mom loaded it onto her desktop and laptop. Me, not being able to afford a new copy, was fortunate enough to have a friend with the means to buy me one. Thanks for the response. I was told to just not get on the internet, but as you know that would be a pain in the ass.

How is it going to hit the internet if you don't register the software? Seems weird...Hope you at least got it for under $100.

with just about any firewall software, you could block said programme accessing the internet - I never let any stuff "phone home" that I don't want to. My firewall pops up and asks if I want to let "program X" access the internet...

I suppose that works if you want to spend system resources on a firewall

I just want to make it clear regardless of risk of being banned - if you have a "pirated" or otherwised used copy of photoshop, as long as you don't register with Adobe, the program won't contact them.

Well then I guess I was wrong. The educational discount came out to be $300 dollars (ngdawg I am guessing way too much) for Photoshop CS2. I'm not too computer savvy, so when my teacher and others told me about the product activation I didn't want any trouble. Next time I will know better.

Also, in the future you may want to look into alternative software. The Gimp is an open source photoshop-like application (and can be skinned to look exactly like photoshop) that can do just about everything Photoshop can for absolutely free. In my opinion, students should not be required to buy software, especially software as rediculously expensive as Photoshop.

Your right Glytch, I shouldn't have to purchase the software for school. I really wanted to learn this, and this program was the only one they used. I think it is Way too expensive for a student, or anyone. Thanks for the Gimp suggestion.

OT - In my case, I'm running the firewall anyway - this is an added benefit. I think the added proection a software firewall provides is well worth the resources it consumes.

yes, I do have a router - there is nothing wrong with layers of security. In any case, a router is not aware of what program is making a call, just that it occurs on a particular port - software firewall is aware of what program.

I believe you can also disconnect your cable modem to make reaching the Internet impossible during the install.. And then just plug it back in after the install/check is complete.
