can I use a wireless print server without dsl?

O.K., here's the breakdown:
new laptop 802.11g integrated WIN XP Hm
no dsl just dial up
picked up a wireless hub and print server just to use usb printer remotely
printer is in same room as old puter only old puter is running win98 1st ed.
so can i just power up everything and configure to print wirelessly without ever getting dsl...should not even have to get the old computer involved in any of this?
Would like to know if this will work before opening the hub & server boxes.

I'd think you'd be able to, but I'm not sure, because of how your comp access the print server. Since you're on a lappy with Wireless 802.11g, it's gotta be possible

I have a sort of similar setup.

Laptop with wireless 802.11b through the wireless router can print off the desktop server running win98 that has a printer attached, even if the DSL is not active.

easiest option would be to plug your printer into the desktop, activate printer sharing, and then share that printer out.

Go to your laptop, install a new network printer, type in the share location of that new printer, and voila! you've got wireless printing.

Essentially the wireless router is acting like a hub/switch and a DSL modem at the same time. The two functions are independent so there is no problem with sharing the printer even without the dsl.

Hope this helps.

Alternative:

Your internal network should have IP's in the 192.168.x.x range if assigned by your Wireless Hub/Router.

does your wireless printer server have a web admin page?
Go to it.
Check its IP.

Go to your laptop, go to the printers page and Add a New Printer.
Select the Local Printer option.

It'll look around for a bit and say it can't find one, click Next.
Select the 'Create a new type of port' option and use the pull down to select 'Standard TCP/IP port'

Click Next.
You'll get the port wizard.
Next.
Type in the ip address of the print server.
In the next input window, give it a name (MY HP printer bla bla)

Next.

Finish.

Now, go into where you'd previously had the printer set up and use that port, or if you hadn't had the printer attached to the laptop before you will get the wizard to select a printer or use your own drivers.

Sorted.
