Sound troubles
I recently reformatted my computer just for spring cleaning and now my sound does not work.
Main system specs: Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz Microsoft WindowsXP Professional Nvidia GeForce 6800 128MB graphics card Creative Audigy LS sound card I reformatted, installed all the necessary drivers for the sound card, etc. No sound is able to work. I have all the necessary codecs installed (DivX) but no system sounds play either (except for the internal computer speaker that only beeps). The device manager lists the sound card as installed without any conflicts. Every option in the sound properties has the sound card enabled and set to be used for sound. The onboard sound AC '97 has been disabled as well. The only potential conflict that I have been able to see is the sound card and graphics card are on the same IRQ (16). Yes, the speakers are connected properly and the volume is not muted. I appreciate any and all help, thanks ahead of time.

It could be related to this problem as well. Before the reformat, the icons for the music (the red rectangles where the arrow points) took the WinAMP shape (the lightning bolt). Now, it has this icon, and WinAMP is the default player for mp3s.

Don't worry about the icons. That's just the result of install order and choices and what explorer will hand off to for that file type. If the devices look good and you can't play system sounds then it's likely something very simple is wrong. I know you said your sound isn't muted, but open your mixer. Is your wave device muted or set very low?

Well this is strange....without changing any settings, I IMed somebody (the default setting is to chime when sending an IM) and the chime went off. And now, the sound works............STRANGE!!!
CULPRIT WAS FOUND! The CMSS 3D option was unchecked in the Creative Mixer, and when checked, the sound works, without it, no sound. Again, weird.
