Windows Security Alerts

Is there any way to get rid of the Windows Security Alerts tray icon? It really pisses me off!

Win XP Pro SP2

Thanks!

IIRC all you have to do is go into Control Panel, Secutiry Center, then click where it says "change how security center alerts me". I can't check it right now on my work computer to make sure though.

Edit: hrdwareguy beat me to it

you don't really want to turn off automatic updates, but you do want to follow the path crazybill was putting you on.....they are 2 different things.

One of the things that annoys me is how WinXP always bugs you if you disable the firewall or don't have a virus scanner installed. You can tell XP to not monitor those aspects by clicking the "Show me recommendations" after double-clicking the little shield icon. In the box that pops up you should be able to select something like "I'll monitor this service myself". Once you set it to quit monitoring those things, the shield will go away until critical windows updates are available.

Hope that helps.

Actually, if you want to control your computer more efficiently, you DO want to turn automatic updates off. Use the update feature when you want to, not when Microsoft wants you to, and read what those updates are doing BEFORE you install them and understand them.

Please, please, please know that not everything that MS wants to load on your machine is to make your machine run better, or more secure. Am I paranoid, perhaps, but I still think that allowing a company that has proven itself unworthy of trust to acess your computer at THEIR will is a bad idea.

Beware "Longhorn" - switch to open source today.

Peace,

Pierre

automatic updates will only load "critical" updates....not updates such as media player, driver updates, etc. most end users will want that option turned on, since they rarely, if ever, think to go to windowsupdate.com.
