Actually, if you want to control your computer more efficiently, you DO want to turn automatic updates off. Use the update feature when you want to, not when Microsoft wants you to, and read what those updates are doing BEFORE you install them and understand them.
Please, please, please know that not everything that MS wants to load on your machine is to make your machine run better, or more secure. Am I paranoid, perhaps, but I still think that allowing a company that has proven itself unworthy of trust to acess your computer at THEIR will is a bad idea.
