What's so great about Gaming?

I have a question for all the gamers out there. I myself don't really care much for playing games online but my boyfriend loves it and spends hours on his computer playing games. It's his obbession/hobby.

It drives me insane because he spends so much time doing it and it seems like alot of the games he plays, were made just to make you have to pay to advance on them.

So I need you gamers to explain to me what makes you love gaming so much and what makes you so addicted to it? Do you feel personal connections with the people you play with or does that even matter? I need someone to explain it to me. Thanks

I can be Rambo in Battlefield Vietnam and the Super Night-Elf Unholy Priest in World of Warcraft. I can't heal people in real life and I can't waste people with an M-79 grenade launcher in real life. It's simply a place to be someone else doing stuff that ya can't do in real life. The main reason I play online PC games is because they're simply fun. Playing against other people is very, very fun. Seeing other player's reaction to a grenade landing on their face from a hundred yards or having people say I'm an awesome priest for keeping them alive is a cool feeling. Being someone in another world and having fun is what it's about. It's not an alternative to real-life...it's simply another world where you can have fun and play games with real-life other people.

sounds about right,

its just the ability to do stuff that theres no way i could really do, and be good at it.

the sense of companionship online is great too. its not often i can in reality become part of an elite team of commandos without any training and actually help the other members.

also my gf loves gaming almost as much as me, which is a plus. we often have spats about what to play, she wants morrowind, I want Doom3. you can all understand how much i suffer. .

It's simply addictive.

Doom III is no different from wasting hours at Space Invaders as a kid, only it looks a bit prettier.

And, to be fair, the storylines are a bit more engaging.

as a former gamer (lol of a year)
i can say that i wasted my whole junior year in HS playing counter-strike...
it was almost like a cult just how we played and we all called each other our online names instead of our real ones when we saw each other.. well i will tell you once you are into it hard core you cant get out of it.. i was addicted and i still play sometimes.. but i have to much to worry about to be playing games...

a kid i know who was trying to date a girl said that he would "make time around his gaming to date her" because he is rediculuous about his f'in games and cant stop playing them.

so yea they are obsessive just because you want to prove that you are the best..

thats my try at it..

I'll put it down as simple escapeism, and in the case of some games, the story.

Its a mix of being someone else, watching a movie and achieving something challenging that requirs skill.

Games are what you get when you take the appeal of movies, sports and stories (books) and other logical challenges and throw them together.

I like that example because I'm an obbessive book reader, which by bf thinks is funny, because if I get a new book, I stop doing everything else and ignore things to finish reading it. I've used this comparison when talking to him about gaming. I wanted him to know I get as involved in something like he does with his gaming. Also I'am a dorky Ebay addict. Don't laugh too hard

I try to understand and not criticize, but sometimes I get fed up not understanding the attraction. So I figured the only answers would come from more articulate gamers (my bf is of few words at times, which is okay but can be frustrating at times )

I was wondering if gaming was more like an escape thing, where you can be taken into another world. I just never really have gotten into it for whatever reason. (Money I guess and lack of knowledge about the games & computers etc.)

But I can totally understand the getting into the plot of the game and being able to problem solve situations and give yourself that since of satisfaction of accomplishment (which lord knows we all need sometimes! )

Actually my bf is a big fan of Counter Strike and the Camelot game? (I forget the name) I was wondering if you guys knew of anything I could maybe buy him in the future relating to his fav games. I don't want him to feel that I discourage his hobby or don't want him to do it. Thanks for your insight it really helps me relate to his gaming!

If you want him to stop playing online so much use your god-given weapon to get your way. Tell him it's either playtime or pootietime.

For me I love the competition, the ability to go head to head with someone that I don't know is great. It used to be that you would play your friends and learn their styles and techniques. I always knew where everyone would hide in golden eye on the N64. Now I have an endless amount of new competition.

I don't like restoring to using my pootie as an ultimatium. Tis not fair. I mean jeez using my god given weapon was what landed me him in the first place!
