Small LaserJet printers?

I moved into a small apartment for my final few years of college and need a decent Laserjet printer mainly for school use. Do these printers vary in quality as much as color printers do or are most laserjets basically the same?

A local CircuitCity has new Samsung 1740 for $99 and a HP 1012 for $199, however the Samsung seems to have better stats. Can you guys recomend one of these, or any other small laserjet?

Thanks for any help

For B&W, I don't personally think it's a big deal. Samsung makes decent quality stuff. HP is good, but for that money, get the Samsung.

I don't pay much attention to brand names, but I do think it's important to get a laser printer with a paper tray that feeds from the bottom of the printer. The ones that stack the paper up in the back and draw off the front of the stack seem to fail more often and more quickly - usually in the form of a half-inch wide wad of paper that's been partially ingested into the paper feed. HP makes a nice cheap laser printer with a bottom feed for less than $200 CAD - it's the 1012 I think. I was actually just thinking about buying one myself - my old Epson ink jet dried out... <sigh>

had a samsung - it sucked at paper feeding.

Now have an hp 1015 (I guess they are all kinda the same). It has been good so far (only had it two weeks).

As with any printers, don't look at the cost of the printer, look at the cost of replacement cartridges and how many prints per cartridge on average you can get.

Most compnaies practically give away the printer because they make their money on the ink/toner cartridges. Do your homework and figure out the one that will be cheapest in the long run, not just right now.

So far at work we have found HP's to be pretty reliable in the long run. We tend to get many good years from the initial investment. We just staryed buying Dell printers so it's to early to tell. I believe the Dell ones are actually manufactured by Lexmark.
