Getting a laptop
Gonna buy a laptop real soon and wanted some last minute opinions from the peanut gallery. Basically I want something thats a desktop replacement and I want it under $1500.
My first choice is a Vaio 2.8 ghz p4, 60 gig hd, 512 mb 64mb graphics raedon card for like $1400. Went to circuit city, saw it was about to buy it when the guy started talking about how the athlon is better then the p4 at a lower price. He then proceeds to show my hp and compaq laptops and I automatically get scared. I have had some bad luck with pressarios in the past and the last thing I want is to get a new system thats gonna crap out on me. Basically just want some idea...are the vaios worth the money? Does hp and compaq still make the same shoddy products? Athlon or p4? |

Yeah, we'll just put Compaq in the garbage can for the sake of this argument, because that's where its going to end up anyways.
Onto the recommentations, AMD's generally are significantly quicker than Intel chips. Don't let the number fool you, clock speed is what matters. Although, the computer you mentioned does sound pretty good. Anyway you can find the ones you're thinking about on the Circuit City website and post them up?

i'm happy with my compaq laptop. Keep in mind that while their desktops suck, their laptops are actually rebadged - not built by HP.
I went with a compaq R3000Z, loaded to hell and gone, $1400. Also check the screen on that vaio. For that price you can get a 1680x1500 widescreen from compaq. usually the ones I see in stores are much lower resolution. |

have you checked around to see if u can get a better price for the same system? circuit city was doing a "We’re giving our site a makeover! Please check back soon to see all our exciting new features." so couldnt see what they were...also imo i would steer anyone away from compaq's...not sure but since hp and compaq are one company now i would be weary of them also

This Acer ferrari laptop has been what I've been looking at, it has a pretty damn fast processor and videocard, and a boatload of extra stuff including B/G wireless networking, gigabit ethernet, dual standard dvd writer, 4 type memory card reader etc, its gotten some pretty decent reviews on the sites I've seen stuff at like Tom's Hardware Guide. |
