i'm happy with my compaq laptop. Keep in mind that while their desktops suck, their laptops are actually rebadged - not built by HP.
I went with a compaq R3000Z, loaded to hell and gone, $1400. Also check the screen on that vaio. For that price you can get a 1680x1500 widescreen from compaq. usually the ones I see in stores are much lower resolution.
