Geforce 6800 GT

I work at Best Buy as a part of the Geek Squad, and I get a discount on this!
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....2&type=product

$310 plus another 10% off through BFG. Should I buy it? I'm leaning towards hell yes, let me get rid of my Radeon9200

Yeah, I'd DEFINITELY buy it. I just ordered one from NewEgg for $424 with retail FarCry. I didn't get mine from Best Buy because only one store in a 200 mile radius has them and they sell out ASAP. These cards are really hard to find.

Yeah, jump on that. I paid $280 for my 6800 NU--thats about what you are going to pay for a GT, and a good one at that.

Something about this card seems too good to be true...

Are the benchmarks at http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_doom3_benchmarks.html accurate?

It costs the same as the X800 Pro, yet performs WAY better, in some cases almost twice as good (at least when comparing FPS in Doom). In particular, I'm looking at the anandtech chart which shows the GT at 94 FPS where the X800 *XT* can't push beyond 47!! WTF?!

Another reason why I'm kinda second guessing this is because of results found here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...6800-oc_6.html

As they crank the settings up, the XT seems to perform much better, which is kinda odd... 1024x768 the 6800 GT performs better than the XT, but 1600x1200 with all AA/AF cranked up, the XT busts out with some 51 FPS!

However, you will also notice that it says the X800 Pro is 12 pipelines when <a href="http://ati.com/products/radeonx800/index.html">ati.com</a> says it has 16. Then again, ATI words it as "up to 16". [edit] Yeah, newegg lists the X800 Pro as 12 pipelines. Hm..

Another thing you'll notice is that the 6800 GT doesn't support (or so newegg says) Open GL 2.0, only 1.5. Will that be a problem for future games?

I'm not sure if the 6800 series was designed strictly for Doom 3 or if nvidia is really just kicking ass or what... but something doesn't seem right. Maybe the card IS that good, and if so, damn.. this would be the only time when I would even remotely consider spending $400 for a card.

Not to mention, I heard it's easily overclockable to perform on par w/ the Ultra. Is this true?

Well, the GT has a full 16 pipelines enabled, it can overclock like a mofo, and is WELL worth the money. This card is SCREAMING

Info on how to OC it if anyone's interested: http://oc3dmark.octeams.com/tip02.html

I've been reading a lot since this morning and people are claiming that they can easily get the Ultra's speeds (425/1100) on stock cooling, so hey, why not?

Plus the card is built in such a way that if the core gets too hot, the voltage drops to prevent damage to the card itself, so apparently it's difficult to actually destroy the thing.

Has anyone tried this yet?

Just got my GT in and ran 3d Mark 2001 and 3d Mark 2003. Holy fucking shit. 15,500 in 3d Mark 2001 and 9,963 in 3d Mark 2003. I'm only running an Athlon XP 2500+ and I almost broke 10k in 2003. Damn!!! I haven't even tried to OC my videocard yet, much less my processor. I see this score going even further. This card is absolutely amazing...well worth the $400.

I tried it. It works PERFECTLY. Mine's running past Ultra speeds now (420/1150) stably. The thermal-throttling feature works great too...I took it too high and it clocks the voltage down. My score went down when I took it too high. Either way, it goes to 420/1150 at least with no throttling.

Holy hell, I just played BF:Vietnam for the first time!! I put the resolution at the highest (1280x1024) with all of the settings on high (or highest). On top of that, I turned on 4x anti-aliasing and 4x anisotropic filtering. This game is running at 60 FPS with my 2500+! I'm enjoying this card way too much.

*EDIT*

I just played Doom 3 for the first time with the new card. 1280x1024, High Settings, 16x antialiasing...60 FPS without a stutter.

Well, now that Doom 3 is out (and Half Life 2 will come out eventually), I guess it's time to buy a 6800.

I had planned for this day and now it's here...
