My computer won't play DVDs anymore - kind of

Yes, I tried several DVDs, burns and retail DVDs.
When i try to play a dvd with WMP, nothing happens.
I installed PowerDVD XP 4.0, it crashes when i try to play, or even go into the settings menu.
I installed WinDVD, i can get to settings, but it still crashes when i try to play.
I have ZoomPlayer. It is set up to use WinDVD decoding for video. It plays DVDs fine.
Here's the trouble. I have to capture some frames from a dvd for a site I'm working on. ZoomPlayer won't let me capture DVD frames. I know both PowerDVD and WinDVD will, but of course...they don't work.
Anyone have any ideas? Why do i have the suspicion this is somehow WMP's fault?

If you become desperate and need to get those caps anyway possible, use DVD decrypter to copy the vob file to the harddrive, rename it to *.m2v, then open it on virtualdub. Scan to the frame you want to save and use the print screen button to capture the screen, then crop in a photo editor.

Hope you get at least one of those dvd programs to work hehe

I used to have this issue, caused by installing an MPEG2 codec that couldn't do CSS (Elecard MPEG2 Decoder). Uninstalling this allowed me to play DVDs in WMP because it then used the PowerDVD decoder instead of the non-CSS one.

I've used ZoomPlayer (Pro) to screencap DVDs so I know that works. In ZoomPlayer you can check to see what filter is being used by default too.

You may want to try the cool free DVD player VLC from www.videolan.org. I can't remember if it does capture, but it has a host of other features, like the ability to stream content. Very cool.
