Convert MP3s to Audible format

I just bought a new 4G ipod and have loaded some audio books in mp3 format onto my ipod. Problem is, the ipod won't recognize an audio book unless it is in Audible format (there's another format, but I can't remember what it is).

Does anyone know how to convert mp3s into .aa (audible) format?

Thanks!

.aac (advanced audio coding) sound more likely then .aa

The iPods read the AAC codec in the M4a container, it also reads MP3, WAV, and AIFF (iTunes converts to all four codecs). Personally I prefer the MP4 container that Compaact! uses; if I had an iPod then M4A might be a consideration for me.

Yes. First, convert them to AAC by whatever means you have available. I'm assuming you have iTunes, so iTunes can do that for you. Second, change the filetype from .m4a to .m4b (which stands for 'bookmarkable'). Third... there is no step 3.

If you need more detail, ask here again.

I've heard a lot of people talkign about this .aac iPod thing. I don't understand. I must be missing something. If I understand correctly, your files originally are mp3 format, correct? Then whats the problem? I have the the orginal iPod, 10 gigs, and every file on my iPod is a .mp3. I've never had to convert any of my files. I rip CDs using MusicMatch (comes with Windows iPod) straight into .mp3 format, then transfer them straight onto iPod using MusicMatch also. Very simple. No hastle, no converting necessary. Do the newer iPods only take .aac or something?

Or maybe you're talking about on Macs? If so, my bad

I'm still a newbie ipod user, but here's why I wanted to convert some of my files. First of all, I'm only converting my audio book mp3s to aac. The reason I'm doing that is so that the ipod will recognize it as an audio book and not throw it in with the rest of my music.

Some of the advantages of having the ipod recognize it as an audio book is so that it will remember where I left off on my book and resume at the exact position that I stopped listening. I can also speed up (or slow down) the book by 25% (it lowers the pitch so it doesnt sound like chipmunks reading my book.)

That is the only benifit I see one can gain by converting to aac. Hope that helps!

Ohhh I see now. I didn't even know iPods had a special audio book setting. Cool
