I'm still a newbie ipod user, but here's why I wanted to convert some of my files. First of all, I'm only converting my audio book mp3s to aac. The reason I'm doing that is so that the ipod will recognize it as an audio book and not throw it in with the rest of my music.

Some of the advantages of having the ipod recognize it as an audio book is so that it will remember where I left off on my book and resume at the exact position that I stopped listening. I can also speed up (or slow down) the book by 25% (it lowers the pitch so it doesnt sound like chipmunks reading my book.)

That is the only benifit I see one can gain by converting to aac. Hope that helps!
