strange goings-on with internet explorer
hey guys. i've started having an issue that i've never seen before. when I browse certain sites (like this one (sfw, popups)) a search menu will open up on the left side of my browser, uninvited. is there some kind of command or entry in the control panel that will disable this from happening? I use the google toolbar and have no need for any other search feature from my browser.
stats: running win2k sp4; MSIE 6.0.2800; google toolbar, latest release. i'll do the standard spybot/adaware/norton scans to make sure there aren't any creepy-crawlies, but is there anything that i can proactively do to prevent this?

It would seem that my anti-ad <a href="http://www.proxomitron.info/">Proxomitron</a> proxy server stops this. Without it, I get the search bar, with it, I don't.
So yes, there is something you can do. ![]() (Besides the obvious get-another-browser. I use Opera, and don't have to put up with that shit...) Last edited by Dragonlich; 06-06-2004 at 06:36 AM.. |

No problems with IE6 and XP.
I've been using this app, http://help.iinet.com/popup-blocker.php, which has helped with a number of IE annoyances like home page hijacking, window resizing, floating ads, web bugs, and more. It's a (um) free download, having been site licensed from the developer.

You also can't do open with Ctrl+O.
There's a bunch of Javascript on that page, and what it does is setup the document.location.search window to the URL specified to the search bar that you see...I think (I only spent about 5 minutes hunting for that, to see how they did it.) I think there's info here: http://scriptasylum.com/tutorials/fr...eredirect.html if your interested in the details. Me, I already borrowed the scripts, I'm gonna take a closer look later.

win2k, IE6, google toolbar here as well, and it does indeed open up IE's search function, with tripod as the search. when I clicked the IE search button, it went away, then when I clicked it again, it came up with google as the search (which is default for me). Scripting on that page must be opening IE's search function, but interesting that it doesn't seem to be doing that for the XP users.

If you still want to keep to the IE6 core webpage rendering, but want to remove pop-ups, ads, tabbed browsing, and add so greatly to your web browsing experience, get Avant Browser. Its what IE6 should be working towards but Micro$haft has been too busy making DRM and Longhorn crap.
