Verizon upgraded my DSL for free!!
Verizon made my day yesterday by upgrading my residential DSL service from 768/128 to 1544/384 for FREE!!
Ok not free as in really "FREE" but at the same charge of $35/month that I have been paying for my slower service, they more than doubled my connection speed just for the asking. So I'll tell you how this happened, it's worth a try if you have DSL from VZ, but your mileage may vary. I've been a VZ home DSL subscriber for a few years, Area Code 301. Yesterday I called 800-567-6789 to ask the residential DSL sales rep about costs for the next-highest service plan for my line, and he said that he could do it for free if I qualify. I think he said that to qualify your DSL has to ride on an ATM or Frame Relay backbone at the Central Office, and you have to be close enough to the CO. So he did some checking, and I did indeed qualify, and my faster service will be provisioned within 5 days at no extra charge! Apparently the story behind this is that they're upgrading service on a regional basis, and eventually since broadband is getting cheaper and cheaper, the 1.5/384 service is going to be their base service. But they can't advertise that until they're able to give it to everyone, and not every area is upgraded yet. But if your area has been upgraded, you can call and they'll provision your line for the new service. Your mileage may vary of course, but it's worth a shot to call VZ if you already have the slower service and see if this is available for you! |

Comcast, though, has a cap of 2GB per month for USENET downloads. They've farmed USENET out to AIRNEWS, who, IMHO, stink.
I tried them both and ended up keeping Verizon. Verizon is moving home broadband up in a big way. They've started making service as fast as 30Mbps available to home users in Texas. Now all they need to do is give me a static IP address ;-) <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040519/nyw060_1.html">Verizon's fiber rollout in Keller, TX</a>

I switched from 1.5 Mbps Bellsouth DSL to Comcast 3.0 Mbps cable a few months ago. Love it. I'm actually saving $5 a month by using Comcast. Now Bellsouth offers 3.0 Mbps, but it is a few bucks more a month than Comcast.

I suppose if you aren't into gather massive amounts of USENET binaries of one type or another, and you can deal with airhead cable service peopel, then comcast is for you.
When I had comcast, I had three TVs connected by them, as well as the cable split ahead of the TV splitter. Comcast made all of the conenctions, did all of the wiring. Then one fine afternoon, after calling about a funky HBO problem where the on-the-pole filter failed, the installer checked the wiring, looked at his paperwork, decided that since I had three TVs and four cable running into the premises, that I was stealing cable from them and disconnected the coax that ran into the house for the network. He even tagged it with one of those red theft is punishable... warning tags. It took four days to get that straightened out. This included much phone time, three technicaian visits (they came out the first two times and disconected one TV and connected that line to the TV - THREE TIMES, all because of the red tag) before they finally got itr re-connected and all three TVs operating again. Not to mentioned the code red hell of the average comcast network node. 3.0Mbps is a third of what they should be providing. One hundred yards down my street, Optimum Online is giving their internet clients 10Mbps. There is somethingf wrong with that picture. Personally, I am very content with Verizon's service, price and speed. I just wish they provided static IP adresses. <Patiently awaiting my 30Mbps connection.... ;-)

I love being at college... =P I can regularly d/l stuff between 1-3mps, regardless of of many people are online.. upload is the same. I really dont know what kind of cennection it is.. on dsl reports speedtest it read as 12up/12down.. and had records or others from the same school at 35up/down...Going home to my cable seems like going from cable to dial-up now.
Edit- any this was while d/ling some stuff with bit-torrent.
