Verizon upgraded my DSL for free!!
Verizon made my day yesterday by upgrading my residential DSL service from 768/128 to 1544/384 for FREE!!
Ok not free as in really "FREE" but at the same charge of $35/month that I have been paying for my slower service, they more than doubled my connection speed just for the asking.
So I'll tell you how this happened, it's worth a try if you have DSL from VZ, but your mileage may vary.
I've been a VZ home DSL subscriber for a few years, Area Code 301. Yesterday I called 800-567-6789 to ask the residential DSL sales rep about costs for the next-highest service plan for my line, and he said that he could do it for free if I qualify. I think he said that to qualify your DSL has to ride on an ATM or Frame Relay backbone at the Central Office, and you have to be close enough to the CO. So he did some checking, and I did indeed qualify, and my faster service will be provisioned within 5 days at no extra charge!
Apparently the story behind this is that they're upgrading service on a regional basis, and eventually since broadband is getting cheaper and cheaper, the 1.5/384 service is going to be their base service. But they can't advertise that until they're able to give it to everyone, and not every area is upgraded yet. But if your area has been upgraded, you can call and they'll provision your line for the new service.
Your mileage may vary of course, but it's worth a shot to call VZ if you already have the slower service and see if this is available for you!
