IMAP Question - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Hey, got a question about IMAP. I've got a client who wants to access an exchange server at another site for e-mails from that company. I'm thinking that IMAP would be the best bet for this, rather than POP/SMTP, but there's a question I'm not sure about.
If they delete a message from the client, does it delete the message from the information store on the server, or does it move it to deleted items, so they can still get it later, say from an other client at the remote site?

I would assume you could configure it either way. My email is IMAP and it works the second way--it sends it to a deleted items folder.

The delete function is still based on the client rules. If the client rule is to move it to deleted items, that's what it does.

Just a note, don't mix IMAP and POP clients for the same account. It won't work as expected. My boss did that....we run exchange in the office with outlook. He went home and set up a pop account and then couldn't understand why it was downloading like 2000 messages to his home comp when he just wanted his new ones....that and POP doesn't support the folder structure.

Thanks for all the help, I guessed that it was like that, but I just wanted to make sure we could "save the messages" for the remote offices. I was worried I'd have to go OWA, but if the messages are saved, IMAP will be better.

p.s. hardwareguy: Thanks for the bonus hint! I'll have to make sure to setup instruction sheets on how to configure IMAP accounts for the users if they use this at home. I'd hate to have to explain that to these guys, they're not what you'd call "computer savvy"

The problem is that if you have rules set up to move messages to folders in IMAP and they are moved to other folders and when you use POP it will only download messages in the inbox. And if you have the client set to delete messages from the server, then thay won't be there on IMAP any longer.
