That sounds about as dangerous as unlocking a Palomino core Athlon XP. XActo Knife + scotch tape = not gettin fuckin near any of my PC hardware. Too risky if ya ask me! I'll all about some BIOS flashing (I hear the 5900-to-5950 Ultra works well...I know two people that flashed their 9500 Pros to 9700 Pros rather easily as well), but when ya have to physically fuck with the hardware, I basically draw the line.

Yes bios flashing is quite easy, I did it to my 9800 non-pro to turn it into a Pro. The whole scraping with an exacto knife is risky though. I personally used an exacto knife to pop off the shim of my 9800, but that's much different from actually scraping away at the card.
That being said, the performance gain from 12 pipelines to 16 is substantial. I don't see myself upgrading to a new video card anytime soon, but if for some reason I did buy an x800 Pro, I would probably try the mod.

see, if someone had the right equipment and actually knew what he was doing, they could make quite a lot of cash selling the mod cards. Maybe $50 profit a card
But seeing how there seems to be none floating around in the market....im guessing modding the card right now is very risky and unstable |

Well, if you actually read what the guy said... you don't necessarily have to scrape away. For some reason he did it that way, but to achieve the same effect, you could just solder a small piece of copper wire between the two points he mentioned.
All he was doing was removing a physical barrier between the two, so why do it that way? Why not just go around it? You might have to remove some of the insulation from the two points as well, but that's not quite the same as "scraping away at your card." Just a thought. |

It depends on what is involved. I probably wouldnt do it though, not on something that expensive. I flashed my 8500 bios from the crippled to the full version way back in the day, and Id probably flash a BIOS again, but even that had me about to shit a brick while it was going...
