My new computer can eat your new computer.

Ah, the most wonderful words in my vocabulary are "Employee Discount"

Intel SHG2 motherboard
Intel Xeon Processor 2.4GHz, 400MHz fsb
512MB Registered ECC PC2100 DDR interleaved memory
LG DVD-RW/RAM Super-Combo
LG CDRW-DVD Combo
Intel SRCMR Zero-channel RAID upgrade card
3 Seagate ST318406LC Cheetah disks, RAID 0
Generic USB 2.0 & FireWire cards
HEC 525 watt dual-fan supply
Acer Altos server chassis that someone discarded

Now I just have to figure out what OS to load...suggestions?

Who needs AGP when you have enough CPU to do OpenGL in software?

Now to make y'all sick...

Some of this hardware I bought at work, some was given to me.
My total cash investment is under $700.

I might take pictures for your drooling pleasure later.

War...does your laptop have 3.2 gigabytes/sec memory bandwidth? Three independent PCI busses? 64-bit PCI? Ultra160 SCSI? There's much more to system performance than the clock speed of the processor and the amount of memory.

VF, got $229 I can borrow?

So far I have comped copies of 2000 Pro, Me (*gag*), 2000 Server, 2000 Advanced Server, XP, another copy of Advanced, and one of 2000 Small Business Server from Microsoft, and some number of licenses from SCO/Caldera.

I bought the DVD burner this winter expecting to put it in my aging Athlon 1000...which all but choked trying to build a DVD from a 700mb mpeg. I figure the new box should rip right through such work.

Cinn, perhaps. what's in it?

Not really, but it's free for half a year and it's the best win OS I've ever used hands down.

Oh I can name a few people who'd actually need that much storage space. Redjake's got 540. He needs every bit of it, too. I've got a measly 240, and I've already used up half of it.

I built it about three weeks ago. The HD on my old computer died about 4 days prior to building my new system. All data lost. I bought it all at newegg and a couple other places.

I was going to get a better processor, but the jump from 2600 to 2800 was another $40. I had already blown my budget too by getting the extra 512MB of RAM

I have 20+ computers and I have a machine that can hold its own against any of these so far. One of my machines is a Dual 2.8 GHz Xeon with 2 Gigs of RAM and a pair of U320 SCSI drives, an 80 gig ATA drive for storage, Quadro 980 XGL video card, USB 2.0 and Firewire, and a 20.8" LCD. I think mine would eat yours even though it's not new anymore - though it did cost $7700.

When talking about eating, I hope no one is referring to gaming or DX benchmarking. A 3.0 HT P4 will "eat" dual 2.8 Xeons in gaming with ease. Xeons are simply not designed for gaming, and the dual processor setup gives no performance boost at all in games.

A simple Athlon 64 with 1 GB of PC3200 and a 5950 Ultra would "eat" any of the PCs here in regards to gaming or DX benchmarking. Now, for server uses, the Xeon would of course be doing the eating. You can't really compare Xeons (or Opterons, for that matter) to regular user systems because they're designed for different uses.

That's still a good setup Jolt, especially for $700. I'd be getting a good videocard with it if you want to play games, though!

Well MY beowulf G5 cluster could tear your little machine apart so fast it would just be plain nasty...

...

What do you MEAN no way I have a beowulf G5 cluster?
Oh, that was just in my dreams??? Damn....
I'm still happy with my P4 1.8 though... I mean, I rarely ever game (RSI makes that difficult) so as long as it's fast enough to install the latest Fedora or Mandrake and run it purtily (with all the special effects), I'm happy.

What WILL you be using it for if I may ask?

My ATI AIW 9600pro came with a coupon for a free copy of HL2. I never played HL1 but I'm excited.

The money spent on the 2GB of RAM is money well spent. I bet that makes a huge difference.

Anyone and their dog gets a coupon for HL2. It comes with pretty much any Radeon videocard. I got one too; we have plenty left in the computer shop.

...but the question is when the game will ever come out. Will you keep the coupon until 2040?

(Oh, and my computer could certainly compete in this arena, but it's not *that* excessive. It's a P4 2.6c, 512 MB memory, 36gig WD Raptor boot disk, and WD 120 gig harddisk for storage, pioneer 106 DVD writer, asus v9560 fx5600 videocard. Lots of other goodies too, such as two red neon case fans, and a Coolermaster Aerogate 2 fan controller. Together with an LG 1710S 17" TFT screen, it cost me some 1500 euros back in September; that's some 1850 dollars with today's rates.)

The games that I'm the most into are generally older and/or less graphics-intensive. Most of the FPS genre doesn't do that much for me. I don't run photochop or whatever either.

I bought the DVD-RW last month and was saddened at how badly my (wonderfully tweaked) Athlon 1000 choked trying to build a DVD.

After 3 years, I needed more CPU.

I was already sitting on the Reg-ECC dimms and the RAID card, so I decided to buy the new Xeon mobo/proc instead of buying CPU and memory (this is my first DDR experience) for the Athlon64 board I was given last month. I was about to drop some coin either way, but already having the SCSI disks is what clinched it...this A64 mobo doesn't have on-board SATA or 64-bit PCI, so I wouldn't get full-throttle disk I/O. I ended up paying about as much for the Xeon & board as I would have for the A64 and 3200 memory.

The graphics subsystem is really not very important to me. The SHG2 has an ATI RageXL chip with an 8mb framebuffer and that should do just fine for my purposes.

If I decide I need to play HLII, I'll buy a Radeon and an A64 this summer.

Hmm...If I do that, I'll need a larger KVM than this 4-port one. :/

Bah that's nothing. My 800 Playstation 2's linked into a cluster will crack root on your Beowulf cluster and then eat it for lunch.

Well except I don't have 800 PS2's...

but I do have a:

Barton @ 2.17 Ghz @ 1.8V @ 38 Idle/ 49 Prime 95 torture test
SLK-900A w/ Thermoflow 92' fan
1 Gig DDR 400 Geil
160 GB HD Sata, 8 MB Cache
Geforce Fx 5700 U 128 MB

Not superfast but will run anything in the next few years with a bit of prodding.
