BandWidth usage problems
OK, there has to be a solution to this, my brother is whinging yet again
Basically he's complaining that he's not getting his moneys worth out of the internet, he uses it like once a week to download a something everynow and then.. bleh. He says he's only getting around 4kb/s and if that's the case he might as well cancel the ADSL and go back to dial up. The way the system is setup is that there's 3 computers on the one line. We have a 512/128 unlimited plan.. Now what they state is that there is NO cap.. but the users that use the most bandwidth are put at the back of the service.. blah blah.. or something, I don't completely understand it myself. But what I do understand is that it doesn't get capped after 30gigs down to around a 24k model transfer rate >_< There's 3 of us on the system. My bro and I on the service and his mate down the road who's connected via a WAN. Things I have yet to stipulate to my brother on WHY he might not be getting the bandwidth he wants is:-
I've basically told him it could be the last one on the list and he said he's had no problem with those servers before Which doesn't mean that the file he's currently downloading isn't having usage problems now does it.. Anyways, just wondering if there are any programs that I could use to 'limit' the download speed of my network? If anyone has an idea thanks! oh this is our current ISP Internode if you want to check out more about their bandwidth limiting ways..

My brother and I are on the Network in the house, the guy down the road is connected via a Wireless Area Network. Something my brother was messing around with a while back.

WAN is Wide Area Network, not Wireless Area Network The term you are looking for is WiFi, stands for Wireless Fidelity I do believe.
Anyway, no matter what, you shouldn't be getting that slow of a connection. That's completely terrible. At the worst case scenario, you should be getting like 30-50 KB/sec. Not 4. I'd call the ISP and ask them what's going on. How far away is the guy that's using your line, also? We have 3 computers at home (sometimes 4) on the same DSL line, and it never slows down. How far do you live from the company's DSL servers?

Just a quick question.... Is the wifi network setup so that everyone can use it or is it locked down so that only the 1 neighbor is using it? A completely open wireless access point could be handling internet access for the whole neighborhood or something.

erm.. it isn't a wireless card..
uses an old TV satelite.. apparently you can set one up with a old baked beans can.. but that's a different story.. Basically it uses a small TV satellite We have like 8 of the older versions (the microwave dish) of this under the house.. the guy down the road has one setup pointing to us and it can only work like that really.. if his dish is in direct line of site with ours. There's a whole commune in town where they rent one of the dishes up on the mountain and have a big network via that. They call it a WAN, wireless area network. meh. I know what you guys are talking about.. and no it's not one of those systems. thanks anyways
