Trying the FTP thing again...need Port help

If you're not using the standard port (#80) to run an FTP server, what ports work? I've tried 57890, 65534, 55555, 65423, 8080, and a couple others. My ISP blocks port 80, so I'm S.O.L. there. Need your help, guys!

And, if someone is capable and willing...why don't you do a port scan on me to see what is open and available.

68.191.160.17

Port 80 is your HTTP port.

The standard FTP port is 21, try that one.

Otherwise, if you tell the FTP server to use one of those other ports (57890, 65534, 55555, 65423, 8080), you should be able to ftp to 68.191.160.17 port whatever.

dont use 21, dont bother if they are blocking the ftp they will block you. i host my own website but i cant host an ftp, the trafic is destinguishable and is blocked by most ISP no matter the port. (i host my web page over 8081)

OK...I'll try that then. Both ports 80 & 21 are blocked, but if I can get http stuff on 8081, that would be cool. Thanks.

OK...when I do that, I get a 403 error, saying I'm not authorized to view the page. What gives here?

that should be ftp://68.191.160.17:6699
also when i try i get:
Connecting to: test
Connection Established
220-Microsoft FTP Service
220 The Fair FTP!
Connected to: test
USER anonymous

and then it hangs.
Have you configured your public folders via the console and set user limits and passwords?
make sure there's anon access and that you've set shares.
also, look into the cute ftp server program that many irc boards use. the XP/2000 server has some holes that you'll want to patch if you stick with it.

I'm using the Windows IIS program to do this right now. I have the folder shared. I'm using anonymous logins, so does that render passwords useless? I'll double check again. Thanks.

Hmmm, cute ftp doesn't give the server for free anymore.
There are always ways *cough* but in the meantime look at:

http://www.bpftpserver.com/ , which i once used for a while.

and http://www.serv-u.com/ which is a know server with a good rep that still give away a fully functional server (personal version) for free.

Got NAT?
Missed your post. The answer is "yes" on both counts. How does this affect the situation?

you'll need to open up the firewall ports and forward then to the NAT'd machine thats running as the server.

the ISP is blocking the FTP, FTP trafic is VERY obvious it is easy to block no matter the port.

dont bother it cant be done under most ISP.

as far as i know Charter blocks FTP
SBC does not.

arch13 managed to get in though, so it doesn't seem like its blocked, if its not i'd say he'd have to setup the server to use PASV , thats generally why it hangs on listing.

also theres a control port and an ftp port, 20,21 normally

try filezilla over at sourceforge its free and has both client and server, you can limit the ports it uses, as well as which to use.

and also you be setup the firewall to forward both the control port and the ftp port.

typically with NAT youll need PASV mode set on the client

i have adelphia and pacbell and neither blocks ftp, in my area, theres no harm in trying and making sure that the firewall is setup correctly.

switch your firewall off or set it as DMZ to the machine with the ftp server and go to http://www.grc.com and run a port scan with his probe tool, it should show up then, keep the ftp server on the standard ports for the test, make sure you disable dmz or switch the firewall on after the test

if it doesnt detect it and you are sure the firewall is off or DMZ is correct, then the isp is likely blocking you, if it does find open ports you can try that,

Alrighty...did some of the suggestions...and then ran the grc.com port scan...and opened those up, and nothing. Dammit!!! I can upgrade to a business package that allows this stuff, but it a fair amount of money more. I guess I'll just deal for now. But, I do appreciate the help...if I do end up doing something else, it will be good information. Thank you.

Check that you've pulled down the server if your through trying.
I was still able to get your server to respond to a ping and inital connection request before the connection failed.

microsoft iis?!!? are you crazy? personally i feel its a bad idea...so many exploits, and if the server hasn't been set up properly, its going to be very insecure. but then again, if no one canaccess the server u got nothing to worry about
