I used to have ultimate tv, and it broke, so now i have tivo. It's nice, it really is. You really need one with two tuners, and a satellite that is at least dual LNB. If you don't have one with two tuners, then you can't watch something and record something else. That's kind of a drag(the buckinghams). Also, there is a charge of about 9 bucks a month for the "TiVo" service. Whatever that is. BUT! The bad things are far outweighed by the good IMO. First of all, the thing you never knew you needed but couldn't live without: The Pause/rewind/ff live tv thing. Man, that is just AWESOME. You don't realize how great it is until the phone rings, or you have to run to the door, or hit the BR or anything else and just hit "Pause!" When you come back, you have built up some recorder time, so you can ff through some of the commercials. It really puts a whole new spin on tv watching, because you don't have to watch stuff when its on. Just schedule GOOD shows and watch them at 2 in the morning when you get home. Also, tivos are built in DirecTv recievers, so if you have one now, now you have two! So get a cheap satellite splitter and put satellite on another tv in the house.

Tivo = YES!!
Disadvantage: it costs a bit. But it is worth the money you pay for it. It may be one of the best purchases I ever made. No longer do you watch whatever is on TV at the time you turn it on. You can become must more selective about what you watch. The 7-second rewind is amazing as well; "what did they just say? Let me check". Head over to www.tivocommunity.org, the forum works just like this one. You can browse without registering.

I don't have Tivo but I have something similar; DVR (Digital Video Recorder) from Time Warner Cable. I agree with jumpjet about the pause/rewind/fast-forward features. Now, if an hour-long show starts at 9 and I'm not ready to sit down and watch it, I'll hit record, do something else until about 9:20, and then watch it (skipping through the commercials) and I'm done at the same time.
Last night I was laying in bed, knowing that I needed to get to sleep, but something I was interested in was on TV. It took me 20 minutes before I realized I could just hit "record" on the box and watch it this morning...which I did. DVR from my cable company is cheaper than Tivo ($6.95 extra a month) and I don't know how I lived without it. I don't think I watch more TV, I just watch better TV.

love my Tivo.. it's great.. it's ALWAYS a show I want to watch on TV. I don't even watch regular TV anymore because I just tell Tivo to record it and I watch it at my leisure. I've looked at the TWC DVR and it's equal for the most part. BUT Tivo can stream music from your home PC, and you can also program it to record from the internet if you forgot to tell it to record something.
tivo for lifetime of the box service instead of monthly is expensive but breakeven point is 2.5 years...
