Removing an OS Choice from Boot-Up?

Basically I got this e-mail from a friend who lives quite a distance away from me so I can't really troubleshoot her PC physically like I usually do anyway here's the e-mail...
Quote:
Hi, Well I tried to install Win 2000 Pro, On my Windows 2000 Family version, and It worked until I restarted the comp, I got the choice of Windows 2000 Pro/Family Version, well I clicked on 2000 Pro and it wouldn't work, so what im wanting to know is how would I get it off my Computer so I doesn't come up at boot up or be on my computer.
Hope you can help, because it has been real annoying when I boot up and I have a choice.

Regards
Angeline
So does anyone know how to remedy this? Would deleting the Win2000 Pro install work? Or will both OS's be installed in the WinNT folder? Haven't asked her anything else about it yet.

Thanks for any help you could give

if not very carefully edit the boot.ini on the root of the boot, itll be hidden

Go into MSCONFIG and check the Boot.INI tab. Click "check all boot paths." That clears up any false boot options in XP, so I assume it's similar in Windows 2000. If it's not, then editing the BOOT.INI file is how you would go about doing it, like charliex said.

well in startup and recovery you can choose the default but not remove/add an option, no edit button....

no ms config in 2k only 9x builds and xp home i think....but not in 2k....

Well you can edit that line out of the Boot.ini file byknowing first what option works... and then get into windows and hit start, run, and type in c:\boot.ini and it will open it for you in a notepad window and remove the unwanted line.....

What I ended up doing was going into Control Panel, System, Advanced, and taking off the "Display list of operating systems" option. Sloppy, but it makes the problem go away.

Like charliex said, you will need to Edit the boot.ini file on the root of C. (The start/control panel.... edit option is not available in 2000, at least not on the server.)

Under the [ operating systems ] heading find the line for the OS you want to get rid of. Write it down exactly in case you delete the wrong one. After you have it written down, delete it. Save the file, then reboot. This should do it.

BTW, I'm a bit confused as there is no Windows 2000 Family version, only Pro and server. Is your friend referring to WinME?

This is not sloppy, this is the correct way to fix this problem.

Thanks, I got her to change it via the Control Panel and it seems to have done the trick, so once again, thanks!

Now she wants to set up a home network, was quite annoying 'cause I found a switch for her that's half the price of mine that I bought a month ago and much better Ah well, feels good to be walking a PC n00b into geekdom.
