Novell Netware Login Scripts

Hey all

My schools computers (in the labs) are all networked, and they use Novell Netware as the network software, which I am not very familiar with. The rights that come along with my lab user account are not very privileged, so I can't access the Run item in the start menu, or see the C drive in my computer. I hexed regedit with edit.com so I could edit the registry, and as a result, I created a reg file that would remove these restrictions. My question is - is it possible to create a logon script in Novell to run these registry files every time I log on? I have access (by right-clicking the red N in the systray) to edit my logon script.

I have regedit.exe (patched) on my home drive, as well as the reg files. I'm not sure as to the order in which things are run - eg. if I can get this login script up and running, will it run before or after my home drive is mapped? If it's before, I'm pretty much screwed, unless I put my stuff on a floppy

NOTE: I'm not really trying to cheat the system here and get access I shouldn't have, I'm just trying to make things easier and more convenient. I'm a tech assistant at the school, and I have access to other accounts and passwords with full rights. I'd prefer to not have to keep doing switcheroos between my account and higher privileged accounts though =) In addition, my teacher said that any tinkering around with the computers would be perfectly okay. She'd give my account the necessary rights herself, if she could.

Thanks for any help!

It depends on whether or not you have rights to change your own login script. If you do, you certainly to add a command to make the changes you need.

I would be VERY cautious about skirting the restrictions. Although your teacher is OKing it, she isn't the one in charge. I can't imagine any admin being happy about that, and most would probably try to get the administration to bring about punishment.

you say you have accounts that have full access, well use the one that has most, on one of the mapped drives you should find /public/wadm32.exe or something like that, its been forever since I've used novell, find your account and modify it.

I'd side with Boner here. If you were a user on my (Novell) network, I'd be busting your ass down to nothing more than guest privs, even if you aren't doing anything bad, as well as take away your access to other accounts.

I would prefer users show me that they can be trusted with more access and that they can be more productive with it.

Have your teacher talk to the powers that be and see if you can get more access.

That being said, no you can't edit your own script unless you have the rights to do so and messing with the registry is not going to give you the rights.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't really clear on this. What I meant was - local privileges - simple stuff like being able to see the C drive without going through the hassle of making shortcuts all over the place, and seeing the Run item on the Start Menu (which is definitely able to be done through a reg patch, by the way). In all honesty, I could care less about network privileges because I don't need them. I only do maintenance, stuff like installing printers, hooking stuff up to the network, etc.

In addition, I'm assuming I have the rights to edit my login script because the Novell menu gives me the option to edit it, and when I edit it, it's saved there, even though I don't know the slightest thing about the scripting language that's used.

So, with that being said, how can I add my reg file to the registry upon log in, using login scripts? If there's no built-in registry commands, can I just have it exec regedit /s whatever.reg?

Ahh, thanks for clarifying.

As for the Run bit, that's local security policy, which is reg related. I meant network privs and access to assets on the network.

Yes, regedit /s whatever.reg should work handily. I am away from the office currently which means I am away from my handy notebook so I would have to get back to you on executing the file from the script.

I agree with the admins in here. Policies are set for a reason, if you feel you need more local access, ask for them through the proper channels.

Hacking your way in is not the way to impress the LAN admins. It is a good way to get your account revoked.
