its not really editing, but if you just want to break the file down into pieces small enough to email, use Mastersplitter
its easy and will make a batch file that will reassemble the file on your buddies' machine without him having to have the program. just google Mastersplitter and you will find a free download site like Tucows or Cnet or the like.

Also, if you're looking for a tutorial to make the programs even more idiot-proof, check www.dvdrhelp.com - they have step-by-step tutorials with pictures for the task you mentioned.

If you just want to split the thing to send (I am assuming you will mail one half, then the other) then you can just rar it and set the file size to whatever the max file size is of your friend's mail server.
www.rarsoft.com when you add the movie to the archive, choose "split to volume, bytes" and enter the size in bytes there.

If you have Quicktime Pro on your machine you can just set your in and out points, then hit Ctrl-C to copy that, then make a new player and paste it in. Then you can save it/export it/whatever. I don't do much of this, so there may be a better way, but that's a pretty easy way to get it done.
