Work of RIAA ?
let's say i'm trying to download a song that i can LEGALLY download (no copyrights) from kazaa and when i play it, i get this garbled up noise and then some music and then the annoying high pitched garbled up part again and so on.
so, i'm wondering if the RIAA did this (lord knows why they would wanna screw up non-riaa music :-( ) or if my damn isp did this (i'm on a university). i've downloaded from kazaa and other p2p from my home and never had this problem. plz help!

Nowadays artists tend to flood the p2p networks with fake files...
Experienced this with Madonna's American Life and also with Linkin Park's Meteora. Usually this happens before the official release of the albums. After that you'll definitely find the correct one... |

Most people are WAY too lazy to delete them from their KaZaA directory. That, or they simply don't know how. The scrambled songs has been going on for a LONG time. Back in the Napster days songs used to be scrambled. A few encoding devices auto-scramble certain parts of songs. It's basically a way to try and get p2p users to go out and buy the music so they can actually hear the regular version. Moreso than the actual encoding programs, the actual recording company like peacy said will open the fucking flood gates with bad files. It's not the RIAA, it's the actual recording companies that are putting bad files on p2p. You have to dig a lot, but you can still find good music every now and then. Sometimes.

you may have hte wrong codec ... or the codec you have may be corupt... or the codec it is encoded with is more recent and yours can not reat it but does not recognise that it can not read it...

Some of them probably don't know there's something wrong with the file. More of them are stupid though, like the morons who can't properly attribute the song to the right artist, like the moron that thinks "Crawling" (Linkin Park) was done by Pearl Jam.

You're better off not going on Kazaa to get anything but porn clips really. I did however get 17 full length (~700MB) public domain nature films in 3 days, so it varies in respect to content. I would find your independent artist's music on IRC or USenet if it's available to you. Failing that, use edonkey to get the full album to try before you buy from said independents. And yes the MafRIAA has been tainting dls for a long time.
