Considering getting a dvd burner. Because of the lack of a standard, I guess the only choice is the Sony DRU 510a which burns all formats.

Is there another burner out there that can burn all formats that people have had experience with?

That's why this drive is where it's at. It burns ALL formats. Unless they come out with another format, you can't go wrong I guess.

pioneer a06/106....i have a 105 and it works great with movies, games, everything. i think its a lot cheaper (esp the oem 106) than the sony. the 106 is $187 on pricewatch, and you usually can find a rebranded 106 for ~$150

I own the Sony drive you mentioned. It has worked flawlessly since day one. The installation process was too simple. I'm not a Sony fan, but this one is a winner.

The sony is mad good.. And pioneer is adecent burner.

Has any one tried the DVD-ram burners. It is not able to be played in dvd players but supports MUCH higher capacities. Usually it requires a seperate burner but i remember seeing a combo somewhere.

Just got a Pioneer 106 in black from newegg.com for $200 along with some Ritek media. So far made a DVD-R that played in my PS2 and Xbox which are both unmodded, the spare rooms Apex player and downstairs Pioneer.

There is also a new LG one come out that is 5 format, i.e does DVD-ram too. Its near $300 though and I doubt I will ever use DVD-ram

Pick up the TDK DVD+R/-R. It's the fastest top rated drive right now. I have one and it works great.

Been almost two months since this thread was last touched---anyone have any late recommendations? Warnings?

Was looking at the Sony internal & external (USB2/Firewire) drives, but with the latest mega-price drop, have a feeling we should be seeing NextGen drives soon.

I have a Sony DWU10A and it has never failed. I found my best price was at mwave.com. They beat newegg.

Might want to consider holding out on DVD burner purchases. Unveiled just a couple days ago: dual-layer burners for DVD+R format. What this means is that when these drives are on the market, you will be able to rip 8G movies onto media without re-encoding them or stripping out features.

(DVD+R and -R only hold 4.5G while commercial DVD's are dual-layered and can hold 8 or more)

ok time for a question about the formats, what the hell is what and whats advantagesa dis advantages to each, i thought i seen somewhere that pioneer came out with the first format and then a conglomerarte of companies came out with the others to standardize but i dont rem or know for sure, can anyone help out with info?

interesting, can you post more info, sources, link, or some?

for general curiousity, and for people to be able to take into consideration if it's worth waiting for.

and a Q - are all commercial dvd's (in the US) dvd9?

here in europe we see a combination of both dvd5 and 9.

We have both. Ususally DVDs with lots of extras and audio tracks require the extra space afforded by DVD9 (dual layered discs). Otherwise, they're usually DVD5. I'd say maybe 1 in 3 is DVD9, but that seems to be changing as newer movies are made/filmed with DVD extras in mind.

Supposedly, the blue laser drives will do dual layered discs (DVD9) when/if they hit the market
