Apple IPod
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm considering buying one and I just have a few questions about it.
I know it says USB 2 and windows 2000/xp/me required but does it work with USB 1 and if so are those operating systems still required? I have 98 SE still and don't really want to change, and I'm pretty sure I have USB 1 even though my computer came with win ME and I changed it to 98 after. Also are there any other MP3 players that can hold atleast 5GB and are the same size or smaller than IPOD for less price? The only features I really care about are atleast 5GB of space and small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket, rather pay less for it if I can. |

The iPod is a great MP3 player, I love mine, and wouldn't trade it for anything.
I run my iPod on a Mac, and my first suggestion is always to just buy a Mac. It's always worth it. Next to answer your questions. The iPod won't work with USB 1.0. The original USB simply isn't fast enough. And about the OS concerns. I'd say you don't want to stray from the reconmened systems. Windows is not a user friendly enviroment, and things don't run smoothly through out their many operating systems. So, to wrap things up. USB 1.0. no good. Windows 98, very risky. If you need more questions answered, Apple is a great source. (www.apple.com) Buy a Mac!

Hmm... I'd buy a USB 2.0 PCI Card then the iPod should work. Don't have too much respect for Macs though. OS X is godly and far superior to XP, but Apple should come out of their shell and compete as a software company, instead they lock themselves behind their hardware. I'd like to see OS X be x86 compatible. Apple could make it as a software company, they make some really nice stuff. Oh well, i'm jus ranting now. Vive Linux

murph2che - Let's keep the rampant bashing of MS at a minimum, ok? We give friendly advice here.
Productive advice: USB 1.0 or 1.1 hardware can be used on a USB 2.0 interface, but unfortunately USB 2.0 hardware cannot be used on older hardware. What you can do (as was recommended above) is buy a cheap PCI USB 2.0 card (I see them for around 10$ on NewEgg) and use that. As for "buy a Mac!", well, you won't get all of the functionality of the iPod (ie: iTunes integration) on Windows, but you shouldn't have any major problems, as Apple has stated that it runs on Windows.

If you don't have USB 2 then don't waste your money getting a USB 2.0 Interface card. With the G3 iPods you will need to buy the USB 2.0 cable separately in order to get the USB 2.0 support!
Just get a firewire card since it will cost about the same as USB 2.0 and the cable. |

I also recommend getting a firewire card...you'll end up using the firewire to charge the ipod anyway. I also recommend that you get the new 15 GB. If you end up buying the 10 GB and all the accesories that come with the 15 GB...it ends up costing much more than the 15 GB. But if your looking into buying one of the old 5 GB then go ahead...i heard some people like the old set up better than the new one. I have a new one and love it!

Fuck itunes, all you need is a firewire card and ephpod (freeware) for pc. I recommend picking up a 2nd generation ipod for cheap. Although the new ones are slimmer they look like ass and the buttons and scroll wheel are too sensitive.

Everyone chill the fuck out or I'll go midevil on this threads ass.
USB 1 sucks, not only will it not work with the iPod if it did it would take DAYS to fill the damn thing up. Get a USB2 or Firewire card both can be had for about $20. It might work with 98, but it's not supported so don't bitch if it fails to work. well fuck. He's a loser now. Well, the Q's have been answerd, time for this thread to die. |
