My only suggestion is to NOT use file sharing peer to peer programs.

________________

Dear Subscriber:

This notice is being sent to you by Road Runner Customer Care because we have received a complaint that your computer has been used to distribute copyrighted material without authorization through a peer-to-peer program. We received this complaint from the movie studio, record company, television studio or other company that owns the copyrighted material. The purpose of this email is to remind you that the distribution of copyrighted material in this fashion may violate both the copyright laws and Road Runner’s terms of service, and to tell you a bit about peer-to-peer programs, the dangers they can pose to your computer and our network, and the steps you can take to protect yourself.

A computer can become accessible to a peer-to-peer network for an unlimited period of time after a peer-to-peer program is downloaded. You may not even be aware that such a program is on your computer; a child or a visitor to the home could have downloaded it. That is why we want to
alert you to this issue.

Peer-to-peer programs may contain many problems. For example:
• Downloading and offering for upload copyrighted material without authorization is unlawful. If you or others using your computer have been doing this, you could be subject to civil penalties and criminal fines. Such activity also violates the Road Runner terms of service.
• The programs allow any anonymous person on the Internet to look at your computer files and copy them for themselves. Such a hacker could view all of your files, which can lead to identity theft.
• The programs, which use large amounts of memory, can interfere with the functioning of your computer by destabilizing your operating system, leading to a general sluggishness at bootup and during operation.
• The programs can contain spyware, adware, malware, viruses and pornography.

If you are interested in a discussion of problems associated with peer-to-peer file sharing, please follow this link: CA Global Security Advisor.

If you use the Windows OS, the best way to remove peer-to-peer programs is through the Add/Remove Programs tool. Other removal options are discussed at NSIT: Disabling Peer-to-Peer Filesharing.

Thank you for subscribing to Road Runner.

Very truly yours,

Road Runner Customer Care

Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe and Data Clearing
Run quickwipe, or the DoD Short Wipe if you're really paranoid. There are plenty of people here and on other forums who will tell you to run the 35-pass Gutman Wipe "to be safe," but one pass of random data is more than enough to make your data unrecoverable by anyone who is governed by the laws of physics.

If you just want to permanently erase single/a few files instead of the whole drive, check our Eraser: Eraser | Get Eraser at SourceForge.net

Otherwise, Darik's Boot and Nuke (Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe and Data Clearing) is the way to go, like MSD said.

I've been using DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke) for years, not because I have anything to hide, but to eliminate the possibility of ghosting and artifacts when switching from Japaneses to English OS. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it takes for-fucking- ever, but it's always effective. DBAN is good because it installs a bit of linux in your RAM to run the program, so it wipes everything including the boot sectors. It's as close as you can get to a brand-new virgin HD.

I'm getting a replacement PC tomorrow and used ERASER on the empty space. Ver 6 didn't work because .net 3.5 wouldn't load in my environment for whatever reason but 5.8 worked great.

I regularly use eraser to wipe free space, especially after a de-frag. It is awesome when you are in a windows environment. DBAN boots to the RAM, so there is no need for the boot sector of the HD, which means you get a completely wiped HD. If you use DBAN, make sure you want everything gone because that's what it does. 100% blank DOD overwritten HD.

I found this several years ago while working for the local government. They have been using it ever since. Some how they are convinced that all their drives need to be wiped using the full DoD method.

However DBan is an awesome program. It's earned a permanent place in my tech tool kit.
