Good Blackberry Apps?

Finally dropped my old candy bar and picked up a Blackberry Curve this week. Partially because I need a phone that has more abilities and partially because I got the phone and unlimited service for free through work. I've never used one before so learning what it can do has been going a bit slow. Any apps anyone can recommend?

Hey there - I have also recently got one... an 8310 Curve. Its not the latest model - what model number is yours? I'm really enjoying the features and some of the apps - it has a really good GPS system.

Here's what's on mine:

gmail, google voice, ubertwitter, google search, google maps (which is great, BTW, if you have Verizon and don't want to pay extra for GPS), beyond411 (sort of like a yellow pages based on your current GPS location), Opera mini, facebook, vlingo, Pandora, crackberry, a local weather/radar and blackberry app world which is a marketing ploy but you can download most of the basics there.

Oh and I do have pacman and Lingo in additional to some card games.

I've got Google Maps, AIM, Viigo, Bank of America, BuzzMe, FreeTips, Opera Mini, and Pandora. Viigo gives you RSS feeds, travel, weather, politics, movie times based on theaters in your area, etc.

Crackberry.com is your friend. Learn to love it.

One thing, your model number 8330, 8310 etc doesn't mean that one model is older or newer, they use those to determine what specs each model has.

So even though they are all Curve, the 8330 on Sprint doesn't have wifi, but the 8310 on ATT does. For example. I don't know what model has what features, I was just saying that as an example.

Poynt, Slacker, TinyTwitter, are three of my favorites.

I have the google app installed as well as Google Voice, Gmail and Google Maps. I listed them separate since they were all Google apps.

I have the 8330 from Sprint right now. I'm loving the fact that I can check my websites and even get on TFP from it. So far I've picked up gmail, slacker radio, and facebook.

Blackberry Curve 8330

Apps I use are:
  • Facebook
  • AIM/ICQ - ICQ doesn't work with sprint but you can still use BB AIM to login to your ICQ account
  • iSkoot for Skype - third-party Skype client for instant messaging and VOIP for your BB. Officially, there is only a beta BB Skype client
  • Opera Mini - amazing third-party browser. Provides content in a much richer form, and it is faster because of the unique data compression used to provide content
  • QuickPull Lite - a soft reset initiator, similar to pulling the battery, or the reset after deleting apps
  • Google Search
  • Google Maps
  • Gmail
  • BlackTrack - logs all calls and emails: names, times, and duration of those two types of events, and emails the log to you. Useful when Sprint tries to screw you on minutes used when they say that so 'n' so isn't a Sprint/Nextel customer or you're being charged for minutes used during your free periods.

Stay away from Google Sync!!   click to show

Also, I've been experiencing problems with the Pandora radio app after an update. Anyone else having it crash with certain stations? I have stations that based off of the predefined genres. Whenever I try to play one of these stations, my BB eventually freezes after 10 minutes and requires me to do a soft reset.

@ jewels: you use vlingo. Did you purchase the full version? How well does it work? I am hesitant to try it, since I know of no one else that will install it to help me test it out. The free version only allows one to send messages to other vlingo users.

Was it an actual problem with the camera or did it just change the side button association?

I don't have a problem at all with Google Sync. Did you check your settings? I do recall making some adjustments to the default. And it might be Sprint. My daughter has the same Sprint Curve but has had many different compatability issues. Have you checked out Crackberry? I spent a lot of time there the first few months after I purchased my phone.

As for vlingo, I only have 2 people that I regularly contact that have it, but I love the idea since my BB doesn't understand me very well. I find that the vlingo does, although I've since been using Google Voice more than the vlingo. Similar, but different. No, I haven't purchased the full version. It's not that good. If you want to try it, PM me and I'll send you my PIN.

I tend to try just about everything and uninstall what I don't like.

PS I missed seeing you around! WB

@jewels: Thanks. It feels good to be missed. The last 8 months were nothing but headache and heartache. I've shot you an email already, can't wait to try this out one of these days. I haven't really gone through Crackberry, only because so many people post solutions that seem to be outright ridiculous; "editing service book modules" is not a solution I am willing to attempt. I'll try updating my Google Software, since I can't seem to find a setting that says it is updating itself, and then use Google Sync again. I will be really upset--not at you, but at Google for thinking that it knows what I want better than I do--if Sync again doubles my contacts and then fiddles with the contact information.

Opera Mini - I LOVE THIS APP! I am ashamed I didn't try this out earlier. Does any one know if I can make it the default browser launched when I click on links from SMS, MMS, emails, etc?

Gizmo5 - anyone try this? There hasn't been a release for the BB 8330 of this program. After reading the forums, people have nightmares installing the generic version on an incompatible BB. Has anyone installed a version on their 8330 and had it work?

Gizmo5 Mobile is a multi-protocol instant messaging application (like Pidgin, Miranda, Trillian, etc) for mobile phones and your computer. I would like to install this as there is no native BB app that works with a Sprint BB Curve 8330 for ICQ. Also, I use AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN. It would be nice to have a single program login to these messaging services instead of 4 independent.

I forgot to mention iSkoot for Skype before. iSkoot for Skype enables Skype instant messaging and VOIP service to your BB.
