I'm fed up with so many web pages using Flash!

I'm fed up with the surmounting over-use and abuse of Shockwave Flash! (And maybe same of QuickTime, too.) This, by just about every web site, these days. I like to browse using multiple opened tabs; and with so many web pages nowadays using Flash for advertisements and/or unrequested mini-videos – oftentimes, with multiple and/or rotating uses on a single page! – it brings my browsing, i.e. my page-scrolling and tab-switching, down to a stuttering, sputtering crawl.

Well, I just disabled the Flash plug-in, in my browser, and I'm happy to see my Internet browsing return to the speedy and easy experience that it once was. (Hmm. Do I need to do this with QuickTime, too?)

But, really! I shouldn't have to resort to this.

Anyone else here finding the over-use and abuse of Shockwave Flash (and/or QuickTime), bothersome?

EDIT: BTW, I've experienced this in both IE and Firefox. And I have a fairly fast machine and connection to the Internet. Oh, and for years I've routinely used Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to remove spyware and malware from my system.

Cynosure, I totally agree with you. But I think what annoys me the most right now are the little double-underlined links that, if you even hover the mouse over, pop up content-blocking windows of useless info or ads. While trying to read a web page, just moving your mouse becomes like navigating a mind field. I have broadband, so they pop up quickly. But they just drive me nuts.

I have to access the net at work via 2X application server. Flash makes you want to poke your eyes out viewing pages that way.

Opera and Chrome are the only way I see the web these days, and neither of them have much problems with loading many tabs fast, despite having Flash on pages.

To translate into English, Ratbastid and I recommend installing Firefox, then installing the extension Flashblock. Any Flash objects on the page will be replaced by a picture, and you can click on the picture to load the Flash object. Or, you can right-click, and allow all Flash objects from that domain to be loaded.

I used to use flashblock but I got tired of it. Websites are so flash based that many of them just appear as a button to turn flash on or off. Furthermore, you can't tell the difference between flash ads and actual flash content on a site and you end up activating lots of ads anyways.

Chrome seems to handle Flash a lot better than Firefox ever did. I can kill the player if I don't want it loading on a page, but keep the ones I want without losing everything most of the time.

I use downloadhelper in FF to download the flash videos to my computer hd. It doesn't work playing them in the browser, but they do work in a stand alone VLC player.

Guess I'm the odd one out, I like flash and haven't really seen it overused...At least not in the sense that using flash to accomplish what they did was overkill and they could have gotten the same results without resorting to flash.

Don't mind me, I like pretty

Does anyone remember Proxomitron? I still use it and swear by it, especially for killing flash and Java. Just bypass it if needed.

IMO, some pages really overdo it, by using flash when CSS+html could produce a much more efficient, streamlined, easier to load result. Without necessarily losing to aesthetic qualities of the page.

For the Safari users here, check out ClickToFlash: clicktoflash - i use this on osx

I think there are places where using Flash really brings a lot to the table. Unfortunately, as mentioned, it’s way overused these days. Here’s hoping people start picking up on HTML5 + CSS3 + Javascript to meet these ends.

An interesting sidenote: Apple.com is Flash-free but makes extensive use of web standards to achieve its functionality.

I don’t mean to say Apple isn’t part of the Flash problem—they put out quite a lot of Flash ads—just that Apple.com is a good example of how people can attain quite a bit of functionality with established web standards.
