I'm fed up with so many web pages using Flash!
I'm fed up with the surmounting over-use and abuse of Shockwave Flash! (And maybe same of QuickTime, too.) This, by just about every web site, these days. I like to browse using multiple opened tabs; and with so many web pages nowadays using Flash for advertisements and/or unrequested mini-videos – oftentimes, with multiple and/or rotating uses on a single page! – it brings my browsing, i.e. my page-scrolling and tab-switching, down to a stuttering, sputtering crawl.
Well, I just disabled the Flash plug-in, in my browser, and I'm happy to see my Internet browsing return to the speedy and easy experience that it once was. (Hmm. Do I need to do this with QuickTime, too?) But, really! I shouldn't have to resort to this. Anyone else here finding the over-use and abuse of Shockwave Flash (and/or QuickTime), bothersome? EDIT: BTW, I've experienced this in both IE and Firefox. And I have a fairly fast machine and connection to the Internet. Oh, and for years I've routinely used Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to remove spyware and malware from my system. Last edited by Cynosure; 02-16-2009 at 11:01 AM.. |

Cynosure, I totally agree with you. But I think what annoys me the most right now are the little double-underlined links that, if you even hover the mouse over, pop up content-blocking windows of useless info or ads. While trying to read a web page, just moving your mouse becomes like navigating a mind field. I have broadband, so they pop up quickly. But they just drive me nuts.

To translate into English, Ratbastid and I recommend installing Firefox, then installing the extension Flashblock. Any Flash objects on the page will be replaced by a picture, and you can click on the picture to load the Flash object. Or, you can right-click, and allow all Flash objects from that domain to be loaded.

I used to use flashblock but I got tired of it. Websites are so flash based that many of them just appear as a button to turn flash on or off. Furthermore, you can't tell the difference between flash ads and actual flash content on a site and you end up activating lots of ads anyways.

Guess I'm the odd one out, I like flash and haven't really seen it overused...At least not in the sense that using flash to accomplish what they did was overkill and they could have gotten the same results without resorting to flash.

---------- Post added at 09:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 PM ---------- IMO, some pages really overdo it, by using flash when CSS+html could produce a much more efficient, streamlined, easier to load result. Without necessarily losing to aesthetic qualities of the page.

For the Safari users here, check out ClickToFlash: clicktoflash - i use this on osx
I think there are places where using Flash really brings a lot to the table. Unfortunately, as mentioned, it’s way overused these days. Here’s hoping people start picking up on HTML5 + CSS3 + Javascript to meet these ends. An interesting sidenote: Apple.com is Flash-free but makes extensive use of web standards to achieve its functionality. I don’t mean to say Apple isn’t part of the Flash problem—they put out quite a lot of Flash ads—just that Apple.com is a good example of how people can attain quite a bit of functionality with established web standards.
