R.I.P. Video Card ?
Did a little cleaning to my machine over the past few weeks, finally went to put it back together so I could go play some games - and I get nothing on the screen Motherboard turns on, system appears to POST, lights flash, everything - just no video. Oh yeah, video card fans are turning.
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I'm going to try to swap cards with a friend just to double-check but I feel like it's bad news bears. If not, I guess it's the mobo. I've tried the usual stuff - disconnect everything in shifts, clear CMOS, blow on stuff, make sure the card is plugged in. Nothingness Anyone have any recommendations? I'm a casual gamer but I play nothing more intense than CS:Source and Battlefield 1942 (probably BF2 soon) - not one for new games. I'm replacing a nifty XFX GeForce 6800XT that was pretty good. I'm not looking to spend too much. My mobo supports PCI Express x16 and I'm not sure if PCI Express x16 2.0 is compatible. For what it's worth, I have $120 in Best Buy giftcard. Unfortunately, Best Buy's selection is not very good, and everything is overpriced. At least it's "free" and I really have nothing better to spend it on. Unfortunately, a lot of the cards are PCI Express x16 2.0 *sigh* |

If the videocard is dead you should get this:
BFG - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT OC Graphics Card - BFGR96512GTOCE Combine it with 10% coupon: http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/u...oupon_0109.png That makes it $130. The 9600 GT is a very good card, many many times better than your old one.

Thanks. I think I'll grab that since it's effectively only a few bucks and I won't be spending $$$ on other stuff. I also just read that PCIe 2.0 is backwards compatible
I'm just terrified that I'm going to somehow zap this one. I guess I just have to be more careful... Oh yeah, the coupon doesn't work with on-sale items |

That sucks about the coupon, I used it on my 8800 GT at best buy and they took it though the manager had to manually enter it.

My car is leaking oil so I'll have to buy it online I guess? Sucks because now I have to pay for shipping in tax - I live right next to Delaware so I'm minutes away from tax-free shopping! Bumps the total cost to about $160, but paying $40 for a really nice card isn't bad ... hopefully it won't die on me.

Have you put another videocard in there to make sure that is the problem?

Nah, I've had an identical problem before and it was indeed the video card. I'm probably going to try to swap with a friend sometime this evening, but I went ahead and put the order in last night. Usually have a small period to cancel anyway, if not, I've got a new vid card :-P

Nope, made sure I had that in :P I've done that before.
If it's really just the motherboard, I'll just throw down for that and have a new video card for $37 or whatever. I guess I can splurge :-/ Thanks for your wisdom, Lasereth |

Well, I'm an asshole. And an emoticon-abusing one at that. Sorry about that guys (insert coy winking smilie here).
I got that card today. I was so excited. It looks so shiny. But it didn't fix the problem. Turns out I had missed a big sign - I didn't notice that the keyboard lights didn't stay lit after a few seconds after turning the machine on, which is typically a motherboard-related issue. Oh well, now I have two working video cards, and a really nice new card. Thanks for the help again. I think I'm going to grab this, and this time assume that the mobo is the problem: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards |
