Wireless networking help pls.

Alright, my router stopped working on me. This was a few months ago, but I just went ahead and connected my laptop directly. Its finally getting annoying for me, so I want to get my wireless working again.
@ first i thought the wireless died because it seemed to be exactly when my free trial for a program called network magic also ran out. Last night I took the router out of the surge protector and plugged it directly into the wall jack and it almost seemed like it was working. I could see my network again, the only problem was that I couldnt connect to it.
I tried to reset the router and I also tried resetting up my network in windows. Now I cant even see my network. I don't really know much about these networks, when I first hooked it up the manuel told me to type in 192.168.0.1 and follow the steps from there. Unfortunately if i try that now, it doesnt connect to anything.
Its a D-link router if that matters. ?

I'm not sure, but I think you have to be connected to the router with a patch cable instead of wireless to use the configuration utility. Can you ping 192.168.0.1 when hooked up with a patch cable?

to be honest, im not really sure what you mean.
I have it set up like this:
cable modem
|
router - desktop (wired)
\
Laptop (wireless)

neither computers are able to access 192.168.0.1
Like i said in the past they were able to.

By patch cable I meant wired connection. Can you open a command prompt and ping 192.168.0.1 successfully from the desktop? Click start, then run and type in cmd.

At the prompt, type in ping 192.168.0.1

If you get request timed out, check the cables and make sure you get link lights. At any rate, this should at least get bumped to the top and someone who can help you better than I can will likely have a better idea.

Connect to your router with a cable and go into the configuration pages (192.168.0.1). Check to see whether you have WEP turned on or not, and if so whether the key matches the one you've got on your wireless adapter on the laptop. That's the easiest answer I've got for why you might be able to 'see' your router wirelessly, but not connect to it.

sorry I dont make it on TFP too often, but this problem is still with me.
neither of my computers can connect to the internet nor 192.168.0.1 when my interent cord goes into my router.
I resorted to asking everyone I know if they're computer geeks or not. I need more computer geek friends I guess, because I have none

Just out of curiosity do the following on the computers once they are on, and if you think they are hooked up to the router correctly

- Click on Start
- Click on Run
- enter the following, no quotes: 'cmd'
- Click on OK
- enter the following in the command window, no quotes: 'ipconfig -all'

What you are going to be looking for are the following -
- IP Address (the ip of your computer on your lan)
- Default Gateway (usually the Router, or the computer it is receiving the internet connection from if the connection is bridged)
- DHCP Server

Let us know what you find there

Sorry for missing this thread for a bit, but I had a linksys router, and I believe that linksys' router page is 192.168.1.1 not 192.168.0.1

Try the other and see. If you are trying to reset the linksys router, you should use the wired computer to access this location. By your laptop being able to "find" the router, and show a signal, only means that....the laptop is linked with the router. Your router still has to connect to the cable modem.
One of the first things I would try is disconnecting the power to everthing, i mean UNPLUG it all from the wall, give it 30 seconds, then plug them in according to this order:
CABLE MODEM- wait for the self-test to finish
ROUTER- wait for the self-test on THAT to finish
WIRED COMPUTER-
After everything is powered up, try to use the wired computer to access the internet. If it does, then the laptop should as well, unless you have a secured connection set up in the router(but it shouldnt be if you used the reset button on the back of the router)

another thing - if you have the original documentation to the router or can find it online - they frequently have a hard reset button. you might try springing that as well, and then starting from scratch. the online docs should have the definite configuration ip page on it. on my netgear, you can either put in a hard ip, or a page name (ie. http://www.router.basicsettings.html or something to that effect). do you get anything in your internet connections at all?
