IBook+Airport Card+Router=Gummed Browser
Ok, here's the sitrep:
1. Got cablemodem back in Jan, bought a router, hooked it up to my cable modem downstairs, and did fine, until Safari started slowing, and eventually, wouldn't work at all with the router. Eventually the router (cheap-o Walmart purchase) stopped working. 2. Bought a Lynksis, hooked it up, and went back to being happy. In the meantime, I downloaded Firefox, and it worked way better than Safari. 3. Now I'm getting the gummed up slow thing again, and have had to go downstairs and reset (via unplugging the router and plugging it back in), and have even seen the evil "This site cannot be located" box that I got before my other router went caput. HELP! I am not so far away from the router for this to happen, and I've emptied caches, and repaired permissions. What else can I do?

is it wireless? if it is, is it locked down? if it isn't, you may just have a leach.

I'm accessing internet via my airport card, so it's wireless. That's why I got it, so I could connect to the cable modem downstairs with my laptop in my room upstairs. Dang, this sounds bad. What's a leach? Is it someone syphoning off my connection? How can I guard against it? Can I hurt them physically and still be legal?
I also read that having a device such as a cordless phone base too close to my laptop may be a bad thing? Is this true? My phone base is at least two and a half feet away - could that be the prob? Or is it that my system gets gummed up - how else can I clear everything off to make sure that I'm not trying to run through the gum? Zapping the PRAM? Dang, I love Mac talk. Thanks for your help, btw.

Partially true on the phone, and true on the leech, a leech is just some one else using your connection with out your permission.
Most wireless networks run on 2.4 GHz, (802.11 b/g) if your phone operates in the same range, it can cause interference, but it’s uncommon. The other wireless networks (802.11a) run at 5 GHz, if your phone runs at 5 GHz, then you could also have issues. If you are in one of these 2 groups, try changing the channel the router uses, for 802.11b/g use channel 1 6 or 11, they don’t overlap with any of the other 8 channels. To stop them, encrypt your network with a password, since you don't know what I’m talking about, I’ll start from the beginning. connect your computer physically to the router, take a small pin, and press the reset button on the router for 10 sec, unplug the router while still pressing, wait 5 sec, then plug it back and continue to hold the reset button got another 30 sec, then let go. This performs the majority of hardware resets to most linksys routers. Since your router has been exposed for so long, the leech may have made changes to the router to suit there needs. after it is reset, connect to it, open a web browser and in the address bar, type 192.168.1.1 and press enter, it should come up with a username and password box, enter 'admin' as the password (no quotes) this is the default password for linksys routers. You should have a wireless tab, under that there should be a security tab. that’s as far as i can get you, I don’t have a linksys router to find the rest of the steps... Some one with a linksys that knows what’s going on, that'd be great if you can take over.

your problem is you bought a linksys to replace elcheapo router.... linksys quality control fell through the floor a couple years ago. all Linksys routers are pure crap now. I know all about it because i have one as well. Get used to rebooting your router all the time. I have to reboot my router at least once a week to keep it working. The more it gets used the more often it needs to be rebooted. Some things like bittorrent tend to force me to reboot it almost daily. Never found a fix for it doubt i ever will.

i think someone is using bit torrent on the router, causing all the trouble. does anyone have a linksys router so they can walk Intense1 through the steps to encrypt it.
