MP3 Player
Hey.
I'm really close to my 15% bodyfat goal (started 6 weeks ago at 20% bodyfat) and I'm about to "reward myself" with an MP3 player. I've researched them (well I just read the highest reviews) and I'm stuck between two. The Apple iPod 4 GB Nano and the SanDisk SDMX4-6144. I like the iPod because... well it's easy to use, small, has an ENDLESS amount of accessories, and it's errr "popular". I also dislike it because it is popular (and thus making it pricey). The SanDisk seems like a good product, but I'm not sure how it stacks up to the iPod. Also it lacks accessories and it's pretty large (3.5 x 1.7 x 0.5 inches ; 2.6 ounces). I had a 30 GB iPod photo, but I traded it. 30 GB was WAY too much and it was quite large and scratches easily (though I have learned from my mistake and will buy a case for it). Frankly I just need a simple MP3 player. Something I can use while I'm working out (weight lifting and cardio), biking to work (don't need my ears, there are no cars around at 5:30 AM), and while I'm at work (I'm a stocker). Ermmm, if it's any help, I plan to get some kind of arm band case, some decent in-the-ear headphones, a pair of big ass headphones, (and if I buy the iPod) a speaker system to plug it into. Of course I'm not gonna buy all these at one time but for every 2% I lose afterwards, I'd buy something. |

The one thing I would suggest is playing with each of them. Make sure the controls are comfortable and convenient for you. I don't like the iPod's wheel, so I went with a different player (although the "popular" nature of it was also a factor). I have to say I also don't like the spare look of the iPod, but you can't beat the Nano for size.

I have a 256Mb Rio and a ipod mini, it's bulkier but it also takes regular AA batteries, and I can upgrade it to 4Gb via SD cards. I like the fact it takes AA batteries because when it dies, I can buy them all over the world and use it again quickly.
it doesn't have as simple an interface as the ipod, but i accept that for AA battery swap ability. I was just reading the Sandisk and it's Playforsure compatible, which means you'll be able to use MTV's URGE website, but not iTunes.

I bought the iPod shuffle about 6 months ago and I love it. I use it at the gym all the time. It holds about 100 songs which is adequate for a work out. I don't need to charge the battery that often. It costs about $130. You can wear it with a neck strap or you can buy an arm strap serperately. You can't pick the order of the songs, you just put on songs that you really like and it mixes them up for you. It's a different order every time which is kind of nice. I also like that feature because then you aren't spending time picking songs out of a list. It even will play the songs that you listen to most more than the ones that you skip over. Definitely money well spent to me!
Congrats on your fat loss!

The clickwheel (as it's called) on the iPod is sheer genius. However, a good interface is only useful if you're a "picky" music player. In other words, if you're the sort of music listener that has to listen to that one particular song, right now, then you need a good interface for finding that song and playing it. If all you do is play some shuffled playlists, then the interface will be less important to you...
If you want a music player that can simply play a bunch of random songs then the iPod shuffle is a pretty good choice considering it's really small... I must sound like an apple fanboy but there's a reason they dominate the portable music player market. While iPods are now fashionable, they didn't start that way. They only became fashionable because they were simply excellent music players. Personally, the iPod's a little too bulky for my taste and the battery life has always been poor but I was finally sold on one with the introduction of the Nano. It's small, has excellent storage, is solid state (something I really appreciate), and has up to mediocre battery life but at least it charges quickly... |

Do NOT buy one of the sony ones, i have one, and it sucks, completly and utterly, more than being eaten by dinosaurs.
Go for the one that weighs less if you using it for activities.

Let me preface this by saying that a million people can be wrong; in fact, they usually are, but the iPod does have three things working in its favor: the "click-wheel," the interface, and tremendous accessory support.

I'm probablty a bit late for this one but my opinion is - 30 gig? hell of a lot of songs, do you have that many favorites? Might as well lisent to the radio. I use a Creative 512mb Mp3 with Fm radio - 2 choices ans does well for me when I spen 4 - 5 hours on the bike. My opinion only (the more songs you have the harder the choice - always ends up on random so why not the radio?)

How about iRiver T10? It's a 2GB mini MP3 player with a rechargeable battery, a simple display and controls. I've heard nothing but good things about iRiver MP3 players.

Make sure you take a look at an iRiver Clix. I have a 2 gb and love it, they just released a 4 gb that's certainly worth looking at.

I haven't heard too many things about the iriver. I'd also rather have more than 4 GB of music.
After researching it a bit, here is is my top choice so far: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Zen-V...&s=audio-video Though, this SanDisk looks pretty good too. Last edited by essendoubleop; 12-11-2006 at 03:58 PM.. |

don't know if it's too late or anything, but my sister got the creative about a month ago and has had a ton of problems. it freezes up a lot. it has to be reset a lot. when she called tech support, they said that it's no big deal and to just reset it everytime it freezes...???? you would think there is a problem if she has to reset it so much. she sent the original one back and got a new one...same problems...so she sent the replaced one back last week and is going to get the microsoft zune.

I've only had it since Christmas but I'm really liking my K5. Not only does it look good but it couldn't be easier to use. The interface is so intuitive that I didn't notice that a paper manual wasn't included (although there is a manual in pdf format on the included disc). Adding songs are as simple as dragging and dropping and it syncs up with a number of programs. While the player is a bit thicker than an Ipod - the speakers are certainly worth the bulge. While the sound isn't loud enough to blow your pants off it'll certainly fill a moderately sized room - all ranges of music and a surprising amount of bass. The speakers provide the sort of sound that'd put most laptops included with high-priced name brand speakers to shame. You get an admirable 30 hours of battery life using the (most comfortable and best sounding headphones I've used) headphones and about 6 hours using the speaker.
The K5 also includes a built in FM tuner and the ability to view pictures (while you listen to music) and an alarm clock that you can set to whichever songs you'd like. .... I'm only a few weeks in to owning it and I couldn't write enough about it.

That's funny. I was going to recommend the K5 as well if the thread opener happens to be looking for other alternatives.
Personally, I have the 4gb Nano and have absolutely no complaints about it. Great interface, great sound quality, tons of accessories (but this has all already been covered). You're just going to have to actually play with each one you're interested in to figure out which one is right for you.
